About this deal

In April 2012 it published a survey that it commissioned which revealed that nine out of 10 of the 1,000 interviewed practising Catholics (35 per cent attend Mass once a week, 51 per cent once or more each month and 20 per cent a few times a year) said priests should be allowed to marry, with 77 per cent believing women should be ordained and three-quarters of respondents not seeing Catholic Church teachings on sexuality as relevant to them or to their family. I delight that the Society of Catholic Priests takes seriously the demands of priesthood through its impressive rule of life – and I am grateful to God for each and every member.

The association was established on 1 September 2010 with the objective of having "a forum, and a voice to reflect, discuss and comment on issues affecting the Irish Church and society today". The ACP was formed less than 2 years ago, and kicked off by demanding that the Church should “re-evaluate” a number of its teachings, notably those on the ordination of women, artificial birth control and priestly celibacy.I dissociate myself from those RORATE comboxers who maintain that priestly celibacy is unquestionably the Apostolic practice (it may be; we don't know for sure) and that clerical marriage as practised in the Eastern Churches (they don't distinguish between the Eastern Rites in communion with Rome and the separated churches) is inherently schismatic and unacceptable. All in all, this seems like a renewal of the “not an optional extra” understanding of our commitment to the goal of Christian Unity which we don’t seem to have heard much of for a very long time. The Irish Theological Association is putting on a day on Saturday, November 26th in All Hallows College on the New Missal. Especially important, I thought, especially having read Tom O’Loughlin’s excellent book, “Eating Together, Becoming One”, is i) which states that we need to examine the issue of Eucharistic hospitality (Communicatio in sacris) from theological, canonical and pastoral perspectives in light of the link between sacramental and ecclesial communion. Some of those involved in his “withdrawal” have been “shown up to be a lot less white than they presented themselves, and some of them have become more oppositional, even ‘heretical’, than I or my censored colleagues in the Irish Church ever were”.

Jan 24 – Monday of Week 4 1st Reading: 2 Samuel 15:13-14, 30; 16:5-13 While fleeing Jerusalem during Absalom’s revolt, David is cursed and accepts it as the will of God A messenger came to David, saying, “The hearts of the Israelites have gone after Absalom.

The celebration of the lives of the saints encourages us to move towards becoming the people God created us to be, that we might set the world on fire, as Catherine of Sienna put it. The Society of Catholic Priests (SCP) is a growing society of women and men serving as priests, deacons, and consecrated religious throughout the Anglican Communion. By now everyone knows, surely, that baptism in the New Testament was always an adult and fully conscious choice of the recipient, following some form of catechesis, and was seen as the primary sacrament of personal commitment.

Since that time, it has emerged that three other priests have also been silenced: Marist priest Fr Seán Fagan, Capuchin priest Fr Owen O'Sullivan and Passionist priest Fr Brian D'Arcy. It said a teenage boy who had been sexually abused by Fr Brendan Smyth gave the names and addresses of other children who were at risk from the paedophile priest to Cardinal Brady, who at that time was a 36-year-old priest. While affirming that celibacy is a gift for the Church, it is asked that for the most remote areas of the region, the possibility of priestly ordination of elders .

In October 2019, former President of Ireland Mary McAleese spoke at a conference organised by the Association of Catholic Priests, which was titled 'Women and the Church: Equality of Opportunity?
