About this deal

Long story short, he made this eccentric tree trunk using an old Crayola marker with colorful tape and pipe cleaners twisted all around it. It is a member of Museums10 [1] and is adjacent to the campus of Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts.

Then in that box goes several texture tools and several spill proof paint containers with paint and brushes. Carle is a precise and energetic man whose large studio hums and clatters at one end with the high-tech whir of computers and scanners, and at the other with the old-fashioned rustling and scratching sounds the artist working with papers, pens, and brushes have generated for centuries. Captioned, signed "Eric Carle" and inscribed to a young fan "For Matt with my very best wishes," lower margin.Point out how simple his pictures are being composed of large and colourful shapes and the colours he uses to create different characters, for example: a large orange and grey cat. Show pictures of his illustrations and point out the large simple shapes cut out of paper and the white background.

The Carle was founded in 2002 by Eric and Barbara Carle, and designed by Juster Pope Frazier Architects. After the contest, the winning banner was hung alongside other submissions in Massachusetts before being exhibited in Children's Museums across the United States and Japan for the next three years. The Prep students (first year at Primary school) were working on a theme of “Growth and Change” and the story “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” fits in beautifully. A guest, who was about eight years old, was visibly upset that someone had taken a “one-of-a-kind” straw that he was going to use as a tree trunk as a part of his piece.

Once the textures have been scratched, students can add more patterns/colours using the small paint brush, sticks, cotton buds etc. Eric Carle’s children’s books and illustrations are a delight to read to children and also a wonderful inspiration so many art projects- who doesn’t love painted paper collages? I made a stand for the butterflies and caterpillars from wire embedded in plaster which the Preps painted in green tones.

I had the opportunity to present “The Art of Eric Carle” at the 1998 “Out of the Box Children Festival” in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. It is one of my favorite projects because success is high and students are happy with the process AND product. Carle's art is characterized by bright, joyful colors created on painted tissue paper and then turned into collages using an X-Acto knife and wallpaper paste.

His best-known work, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, has eaten its way into the hearts of literally millions of children all over the world and has been translated into more than 62 languages and sold over 41 million copies.
