About this deal

I really like that it’s sapphic though, which is probably why, despite everything, I still think relatively high of this book. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. I hate to be cynical, but even during an event as chaotic as a giant freightliner sinking in the middle of the Atlantic; the likelihood of a person of color making it one of the 20 lifeboats ahead of a white-skinned passenger was probably slim to none. It wasn’t like A Million to One was so long that this part of the plot needed to be cut down for time—it’s barely over 300 pages. South Asian food comes with so much nuanced variety across each individual country alone (Pakistani food is diff from Bengali food which is diff from Indian food, etc); for someone to come from a region with a very unique flavor profile and cuisine, Hinnah could have elaborated more about the stark difference between Irish food and what she's used to.

There’s plenty more datum to parse through but you get the point, that the odds of all four of these women surviving would be better than average if they were port side First-Class, less if they find themselves keeping company with the steerage. Seems simple enough, except for the fact that someone will of course notice something so valuable missing, a variable they think they’ve accounted for, and that forced proximity has appended a past problematic relationship into the equation. Violet is an immigrant who’s stealing and working to support her younger brother who’s still in Croatia. Perfect for fans of Stalking Jack the Ripper and Girl in the Blue Coat, this high-seas heist from the author of The Henna Wars is an immersive story that makes readers forget one important detail— the ship sinks. Every page of Adiba Jaigirdar’s A Million to One glitters like the Titanic itself, with all the exquisite tension of a first kiss—or an impossible heist.

It’s about having the courage to take that leap of faith, to put your trust in someone else despite little or no assurance that it will work out, because you both want the same thing, a better life.

My biggest gripe was how Hinnah's family fed into the same old narrative of oppressive, neglectful, backward brown parents. And I'm not saying all this to harp on the lack of food descriptions, every character's background was so vague and rushed that you might as well substitute and swap out the races/ethnicities, it wouldn't have made a difference. These four young women are so incredibly well-drawn that you’re rooting for them to succeed in crime. While the planning and execution of the heist keep the story ticking along, the action and excitement really escalate in the latter half of the book. However, I did like how past actions and connections are revealed when the characters are already onboard. This here is an example where Jaigirdar could have given us so much more detail and cultural context. These revelations certainly test the friendship of the girls and I thought it added depth to the narrative. For teenagers, they might be interested in this historical period, but I think this missed the mark a fair bit. He played his part in the English revolution at Glasgow Rangers and managed QPR, Crystal Palace, Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City. I moved to the Sooner State when I was seventeen and met my soul mate and best friend not long after.

Perfect for fans of Stalking Jack the Ripper and Girl in the Blue Coat, this high-seas heist from the author of The Henna Wars is an immersive story that makes readers forget one important detail— the ship sinks. This is where Adiba has full authority, embracing a bit of a hedonistic approach as well, keeping their fates ambiguous until the very end. I can’t say who does what obviously, but when the ship does in fact start to sink, Adiba provides plenty of opportunities for these four to give unto others. He thought he could pretend it never happened… until his lover plummets to her death from their hotel room.It was a really quick read, perfect for a rainy day, a palate cleanser, a hopeless romantic mood read! It was the skeleton of a heist, lacking all of the meat and muscle that would have made it substantial. An engrossing read which illustrates the difficult position of unattached girls in the 1910’s – will make a super read for historical fiction fans. TITANIC FACT: Although the ship could carry 3,547 people, only 2,223 passengers and crew were on board. Adiba Jaigirdar, author of one of TIME‘s Best YA books of all time and winner of the YA Book Prize 2022, gives Titanic an Ocean’s 8 makeover in this nail-biting heist set onboard the infamous ship.
