About this deal

After a short while, the black rats became restless and the giant white ones began attacking the humans. Although the police were initially, and understandably, very sceptical about his claims, purely as a result of Childes’ visions they eventually managed to track down the child-molesting murderer.

It’s a bit of a classic horror story idea, maybe not so overused back in 1985 when the novel was first published, but nevertheless, not completely unchartered ground. Although Herbert’s preoccupation explains why the predominantly female cast of characters (protagonist’s ex-wife, daughter, girlfriend; female coworkers, girl students; prostitute victims, the cat, the girl next door…) behave in ways no female has ever behaved, even British ones. The manuscript was typed by Herbert's wife Eileen, who sent it off after nine months to nine different publishers.

Herbert released a new novel virtually every year from 1974 to 1988, wrote six novels during the 1990s and released three new works in the 2000s. Because of Overoy’s involvement in the prior case with Childes, the DI had come to accept Childes’ unwanted psychic ability.

However, what Herbert brings to the table alongside the principal idea, is a hefty serving of in-your-face brutality of which Herbert has become somewhat of Herbert’s signature trait. He relentlessly draws the reader through the story's ultimate revelation - one that will stay to chill the mind long after the book has been laid aside. Others of Herbert's books, such as Moon, Sepulchre and Portent, are structured as thrillers and include espionage and detective story elements along with the supernatural. The Jonah is in large part the story of a police investigation, albeit by a policeman whose life is overshadowed by a supernatural presence.

My Mum was not so into the horror, only one or two of my friends were and the sex scenes in his books made them feel all the more adult. I also thought it was interesting because it was written back in the eighties and talked about how computers might one day end up in the majority of households. Yes, he is dealing in horror and bleak subjects, but there’s never a moment taken to lighten the tone. Widely imitated and hugely influential, his 19 novels have sold more than 42 million copies worldwide. This was an interesting little read because while it wasn’t scary, it was still a decent story that was well told.

He has some psychic powers, despite the fact that he doesn’t really believe in them, and he finds himself witnessing all sorts of horrible things, including some brutal killings. There was a card inside of it written to the last person who read it and clearly used as a bookmark. Unsurprisingly I had some pretty high expectations from this book and which it failed to live up to.

Working as a full time author, Herbert used to design the covers of his books as well as do their publicity on his own. I really enjoyed it and wasn't left hanging as you are with a lot of these themed books so a 4/5 for me. The giant white rats then started dominating the smaller black ones and forced them to bring food for them. los últimos asesinatos fueron los que más sentí porque aunque no eran personajes que conocían profundamente, cada uno por distintas razones te llegaban al kokoro. There’s insanity afoot and what Herbert is going to produce from this fertile ground is drenched in the kind of dark and twisted horror that has been an absolute key to much of his prior work.
