This ultralight award winning 1L filtration bottle from Katadyn removes bacteria, cysts and sediment with a pore size of just 0.The only downside that I can fathom would be that it works best to suck through the drinking nozzle to get the water, so really (especially in Covid times) you need your own device rather than sharing. I toss it in the back of my pack; I have two soft flasks on the front of my chest and this in the back, and then I can just fill up those soft flasks whenever I need to. micron hollow-fibre filter that will remove bacteria, cysts and sediment at a rate of up to 2 l/min. It’s relatively fast — a little bit slower than putting it in a bottle that doesn’t have a filter because you are passing the water through a filter. The path is quick by bike from the main road, a little rocky in places and tyre choice being the determining factor in being able to ride it all.

The Katadyn BeFre is a great option for anyone venturing into the backcountry (where viruses need not be worried about). As an extremely packable and lightweight filter, the BeFree is one of our favorite options for activities like trail running or mountain biking, where soft bottles are a huge plus. That being said, it is still worth looking into as an option for making your cow-poop-filled water safe to drink. It'll filter up to a thousand litres before it needs replacing (depending on how dirty the water is) and is easily cleaned just by rinsing.

If you plan on going long distances with this as your only filtration system, we'd recommend carrying a second soft bottle in case the first one does leak or break, thereby defeating the purpose of ultralight. Notable amongst long-distance bike riders trail runners and the like, this is perfect for solo on-the-go filtration. It is also really easy to keep clean, either by filling the bag and just shaking the dirt free of the filter, or by removing the filter unit and swooshing it about in some water.If you squeeze the bottle to get the water to filter through it does still work, but seems a bit less effective than drinking direct. The EZ-Clean membrane will filter micro-organisms and suspended particulates from sources such as streams, lakes and springs.
