About this deal

Perception is the process by which the brain helps create each person’s experiences of the world by processing sensory information, but little is known about how this process differs for each person. The Perception Census comprises a series of brain teasers, illusions and games that explore colour, sound, how we experience the passing of time, our beliefs about the world, and much more. Our worldview makes it really difficult to be empathetic, because seeing the world through the eyes of someone else takes so much effort.

To be clear, the narrative isn’t true. It’s merely our version, our self-talk about what’s going on. It’s the excuses, perceptions and history we’ve woven together to get through the world. It’s our grievances and our perception of privilege, our grudges and our loves. Professor Fiona Macpherson, who is the Director of the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience, said:“The study will help us reflect on what happens when differences in perception lead to apparent disagreement between people. In some instances, disagreement might mean some people are seeing the world correctly, and some incorrectly. Or one person might be accurately detecting one feature of the world, a second person another feature. Or perhaps no one is perceiving a shared objective reality, rather each of us is getting a glimpse of the creations of our own minds.”

The RSA short animation above is an excerpt from this TEDx Talk by Dr. Brené Brown on the power of vulnerability. Empathize” is actually the first stage of the design thinking process — what could be more important than that?! It makes sense really when you think about it. Your goal, as a designer, is to gain an empathic understanding of the people you design for, after all! You should have a burning desire to observe, engage and empathize with the people you design for to understand their experiences and motivations. What’s more, you’ll need to immerse yourself in their physical environment if you want to have any chance at gaining a deeper personal understanding of the issues, needs and challenges involved in their day-to-day lives. Once I realized that everyone is irrational, all the time, my life became a lot simpler.” ~ Scott AdamsEmpathy is what is what is missing in American politics today, especially after the recent elections. Most conversations seem to unravel into a fierce finger-pointing competition without making any progress. Both sides think they are right and other is wrong. And they get frustrated that the other side is missing the point. What’s good to note is this empathic phase of design thinking is named differently depending on which version of the methodology you follow. Different schools and companies which use design thinking have called empathic research "the Empathize stage" (as we do), "the understand phase," "the hear phase," and simply "looking," as well as a number of other terms. Regardless of which phrase you’re familiar with, the core is essentially the same — empathy is deeply human-centric and is essential at the start of any design process. Empathy is Crucial to Business Success I think although children aged 6+ can get a lot out of it, really understanding the biology and the science behind how animals and humans see, means that it was pitched pretty perfectly at the two nine year olds who were playing with the set.
