I don’t know if it’s meant to be a take on a French farce but that’s what it feels like with similar (not) humour. He bluffed that he was a Romanov, which kept Anastasia's mother happy for a time, but of course his actual identity was eventually exposed -- and readers know that she wound up with Macaire. More time is dedicated to the murder in the past, which was a bit of a disappointment since the ‘today’ story is more interesting than the murder in the past. The wealthy private bank family machinations of the earlier murder seem unrealistic, bland and contrived, like having a complex plot explained to you after a movie leaves you totally befuddled. The characters are interesting, likable, and a bit mysterious. But, why not? It’s a mystery, right?

A pesar de que este es un libro con cerca de una docena de personajes importantes y múltiples saltos en el tiempo, es imposible dejar de leerlo. The most prominent female character who doesn’t sleep with or pine after the author insert character is fought over and manipulated by the men in this book in a way that indicates the author fundamentally does not believe women have any agency or free will at all. I sighted more reading this book than I did reading the incomprehensible assembly instructions of my Ikea BRIMNES bed.Over the years, Macaire has also been regularly seeing a psychoanalyst, Dr. Kazan -- though apparently never asking himself whether it's wise to rely on a professional who was recommended to him by Lev ...... Many of the characters bite their tongue when they really should be more open -- most notably Anastasia -- and of course Macaire sits on that big secret of working so long as a secret agent. Throughout the book I kept on wondering where was the author of The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair, because it cannot be the same person who wrote this book. All characters seem caricatures and stereotypes rather than real people. Not for a minute you believe they could be real people.

BUT, the clichés: the men characters who always have to be scared of commitment or unable to make the right decision (hello narrator, hello Lev), the women characters who are always desperate to be loved or love (hello Anastasia), the lines that sometimes seem to come from a Hallmark movie. He writes that when, after two months, the affair came to an abrupt end he decided he needed a break he headed off to Verbier -- a place Bernard was also fond of. MY THOUGHTS: I was looking forward to a 'book within a book' mystery, which is not what I got. Think 'corporate conspiracy' instead. They speak to many of those involved, and slowly put together the picture of what happened the night of the murder.
