One commonly suggested household item for testing ammonia levels is household bleach. While bleach can indeed react with ammonia, it is not recommended for this purpose. Bleach contains many additional chemicals and additives that can interfere with the reaction and give inaccurate results. Moreover, bleach is toxic to fish and will harm them if introduced into the tank, even in small amounts. While not as accurate as testing kits, ammonia test strips can provide a rough estimate of ammonia levels in your fish tank. These strips work by changing color in the presence of ammonia. Simply dip the test strip into the water and compare the color change to the provided color chart. Keep in mind that test strips may not provide highly precise measurements but can help you determine if ammonia levels are high or low.

Oxidation of 5-aminosalicylate is carried out in the presence of a catalyst, nitroprusside (also called nitroferricyanide), which results in the formation of indosalicylate, a blue-colored compound. The blue color is masked by the yellow color (from excess nitroprusside) causing a green-colored solution. The intensity of the resulting green color is directly proportional to the ammonia concentration in the sample. Increased free ammonia levels indicate the onset of nitrification. A sudden drop in free ammonia suggests that nitrification is in process and nitrite is being formed. The free ammonia value is useful in determining the amount of free chlorine needed to increase the monochloramine residual at a booster station. The free ammonia level can be reduced by adding free chlorine at a ratio of 5:1 as Cl 2:N to guide the process and help minimize nitrification potential. Total Ammonia Can you use test strips to test your water parameters? Absolutely. Should you use them? In my opinion – no.

To me, this is the biggest reason why I don’t recommend aquarium test strips – financially, they just don’t make sense. Erratic Swimming Behavior: High ammonia levels can affect the fish's nervous system, leading to erratic swimming behavior. Fish may exhibit twitching, darting, or swimming in irregular patterns. They may also lose coordination and balance, swimming upside down or sideways. Such unusual behavior can indicate the presence of toxic levels of ammonia.

The second filter pad is an hydrophobic material that has been treated in such a manner that only the gaseous ammonia is absorbed by the second filter pad. The second filter pad contains an indicator(s) capable of detecting the gaseous ammonia through a change in the pH of the filter pad. Test strips are only good for so long. Over time, the reagents in the color-changing pads begin to break down – when this happens, you cannot guarantee that the test results will be accurate. Both the Nessler and salicylate methods are based on a reaction with molecular ammonia in a basic solution. If the original sample contained ammonium ions, the basic reagents would convert it to molecular ammonia and then it will react and contribute to the final test result. However, these simple ammonia tests do not include the ammonia that is in organically bonded amino groups. A true total ammonia test would include chloramines and require heating the sample in an acidic solution to digest the organic ammonia. Regular maintenance and proper tank care are also essential for reducing ammonia levels. This includes regular water changes, removing uneaten food, and cleaning the tank and filter regularly. By keeping the tank clean and free from excess waste, you can minimize the buildup of ammonia and maintain a healthy environment for your fish.
