About this deal

Also field grown, root ball plants are scooped out of the ground using machinery to keep their root system intact and wrapped in bio-degradable, hessian sacks. Our 2L pots are ideal for the production of amenity plants grown for one year, most commonly used for our 2L herbaceous and shrub lines, this size is great as the plants are small enough to establish but large enough to make an impact when first planted. Well having racked my brain to remember how to work out the capacity of the shape of that 9 cm pot - it's neither a cube nor a conical frustum (!

Plant Pot Size Guide - Hillier Plant Pot Size Guide - Hillier

Pot grown plants are more expensive than cell grown, P9s, bare roots or root balls (for the equivalent height) but it's worth bearing in mind that even the smaller 2 litre pots are a minimum of 2 years old (sometimes 4 years old, depending on growth rate), and they have been re-potted up to 3 times, trimmed up to 5 times, fed regularly and watered daily - and all for less than a glossy magazine or a fancy coffee! This means they are garden-ready, and you can plant them as soon as you’re ready to get gardening (provided there is no frost on the ground). One particular pot size may seem very competitive in comparison to another, but this does not mean you are getting better value. Although these are the smallest pot size that we currently sell, they are still substantially larger than many online offerings. These corkscrew-rooted Eucalyptus trees should only ever be grown to a maximum height of 10 feet (3m) as they are apt to fall over when around 20 years old or at the very least develop a nasty lean. You can easily see what size you will be purchasing when you browse online, as every plant will have the size at the end of its name – e. x 1 litre airpot kits– ideal for raising your own seedlings and cuttings to produce a vital, healthy root-system. The older the tree you purchase the greater the instant impact it will make and the less you will have to wait for fruit. Some offer plants in P9 pots which are plants often less than 1 year old, many varieties of which can be more difficult to establish straight out in the garden. Air Pots are widely used by a variety of vegetable growers, tree nurseries and other well respected horticultural establishments across the globe.

At small sizes plant pots are flat-topped cones, while larger sizes are more structurally stable cylinders. Even if it’s only been in that enclosed pot for a few weeks, it’s too late and the damage to the root system may already be done. This kit is approximately 435 mm tall and 388 mm in diameter, and comes with green screw fittings that may stick out a bit further. The majority of our shrubs are available in 3-litre pots as their roots tend to be a little larger than the perennials.Trees can be sent from late autumn to early spring when they are dormant without any soil - these trees are known as bare root. Phlox douglasii ‘White Admiral’ is a great example of a Litre Pot, a small but delightful addition to any garden.

Most pot sizes are referred to by their volume capacity in litres, with the exception of pots that are smaller than 1 litre which is usually referred to by the diameter or cross section of the top of the pot (P9 is approximately a 9 x 9 cm pot). Our 1 litre pots are predominantly used for herbaceous varieties, which means that after a few weeks of good weather, you will be able to enjoy a handsome plant specimen, at a fraction of the cost.

Now you have calculated the cubic centimetres of you pot, simply divide by a thousand to arrive at litres. Thus a tree may start out in the ground, before being transferred to a 9L and then a 15L, and so on. Pot on your Eucalptus into a bigger Air-pot if you want to grow it in a pot for a short time before planting out in the ground.
