If your search for the ideal radio has sent you on a hunt for a lightweight and portable design, then you’re likely to come across the Elan series by Pure. Although some Pure radios can be upgraded unfortunately many digital radios cannot be updated. This is often because of the hardware inside the radio. Finding the serial number As mentioned above, one of the first thing we noticed in our Pure Elan E3 review, was the fact that this device is very easy to use. You don’t need to spend forever reading your Pure Elan E3 manual before you can get started.
Smart speakers are popular these days, but there’s still a place for one of the best DAB radios for cooking in the kitchen, working in a home office or relaxing in the garden on a sunny day. Especially considering many of the top DAB radio devices are compact and look good.
Instead, you can jump straight into action, setting your favourite stations to one of forty available spaces on your list of preferred channels. Given that the Elan E3 is a small mono radio, you can’t expect too much from the sound quality. The sound is clear and is good enough for casual listening, but there isn’t much depth to it. The radio is fine for listening to speech programmes but isn’t so good for listening to music. The 2.4″ TFT colour display has a resolution of 320×240 and in digital radio mode shows the name of the station and programme information, the time and signal strength. Tuning into Classic FM in the FM modeTo browse the list of stations the forward/Stations button has to be pressed first. This opens the list of stored stations which can be browsed by turning the rotary knob left and right. A different station can be selected by pushing in the knob. This works well but if you forget to press the Stations button first you’ll find yourself changing the volume. The Pure Elan Connect+ isn’t really designed for parties or even BBQs, although it does a reasonable job outdoors. However, even with basic stereo imaging from its two speakers, the 3W units don’t provide much power. Sadly, it doesn't feature a handle, but at 109 x 85 x 187mm, it’s easy enough to move around the home. To call it travel-friendly would be going too far, though; the Pure Elan Connect is best left in a kitchen or bathroom and only occasionally taken outside. There are also six equalisation settings to choose from if you want to adjust the tone and depth of your music according to your individual needs. Pure Elan E3 review: Verdict That comes with advantages, however – not least a 643g weight (around 770g, if you insert the four AA batteries to make it portable). We also liked its unusually small depth; measuring 115 x 82 x 247mm, it’s far less dominating on a kitchen workshop than some rival DABs.
Note that there is a home button, but it merely takes you to the hub screen for the source you’re already on. You have to hit the source button to reach the ‘real’ home screen that hosts four icons: internet radio (a globe), DAB (the DAB logo), FM radio (an image of a small radio) or Bluetooth (the Bluetooth logo). The radio has a single 2.5″ full range driver and the specifications give the output as 3 Watts. At full volume the radio fills a kitchen and can still be heard over a kettle or cooking without the sound distorting.Internet radios are a type of radio that transmits radio signals via the internet instead of air, as is the case with FM and DAB+. This allows users to receive radio stations and programmes from all over the world via their computers, smartphones and internet-enabled radios. Not everyone will make use of the wireless charging feature: but either way you're getting a sleek, well-designed DAB radio and speaker that's well worth a look.
