About this deal

There’s not a thing out of place, not a mark that I can see, the only vaguely sharp edge is around the small grooves on either side of the lens (more “grabby” than sharp), and it just feels solid all around. At first glance the caps on both sides look similar but aren't: the left closes off the battery compartment and the right one hides the on and off switch. There is also a silicone strip near the headband that improves adherence as well as deflecting sweat to the sides of the head away from the eyes. To access the auxiliary red light and flashing modes double press the power button while the light is off and it will turn on in red low. I also hope that Nitecore will add an option to quickly tighten the headband to make sure it is easier to attach.

With a max spotlight output of 1,600 lumens and a max floodlight output of 1,200 lumens, the NITECORE HU60 is the first E-focus headlamp in the industry powered by a USB power source and available for wireless control with a wristband remote. The light emitted by the 2 main LEDs (Luminus SST-40-W) has a good uniformity and the beam covers an illumination angle of 150 °. Continue to hold until it reaches 100% spot or flood, or release the button once your desired combination beam has been achieved. The HC68 also features an auxiliary red light which effectively protects night vision, making it ideal for wildlife observation, stargazing, emergency response and night photography.A long press of the '+' switch increases the spotlight output ratio, decreasing the floodlight output and a long press on the '-' button increases the floodlight ratio, decreasing the spotlight. BRIGHT FOCUSABLE HEADLAMP - Continuously adjust between a 1800 lumen focused spotlight or a 1400 lumen wide floodlight with a max of 2000 lumen in total. It's also a plus that the HC68 does not feature a proprietary battery (all the 18650 with a button top will work) or a proprietary charging system (standard USB-C). Unfortunately (for me), it’s still a cool white – I think this light would be better served with something more neutral or even warm white, but as always, this is a personal preference. I also don’t see much point in doing throw measurements at the lower levels, so I’ll be doing it on Mid, High, and Higher on both 100% flood and 100% spot, as well as Turbo.

Lux Meter: For lumen readings and runtimes, an Adafruit TSL2591 connected to a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu, using RuTiTe by bmengineer in a custom sphere. I can't comment yet on on the torch itself because my friend has not brought it back from HK until next week. The threads and o-rings for the battery cap and switch/charging cover are satisfyingly smooth with a bit of resistance and feel sealed the internal components are well protected from water and dirt. From the stand-by mode you end up in the special mode if you press the button twice: two modes of red and flashing light, a white beacon mode and SOS.

There’s a huge amount of modes that can be tested here – five brightnesses in two different modes (spot and flood), with an infinite number of options between, as spot and flood mix. As far as I know, there is no way to make the light stay on Turbo continually, which is a little annoying. The protection circuit will limit the output to 8A even in case of an overrun, while the cells are capable of 10A.
