Having owned and tried the two MIDI controllers above, I felt the SE49’s quality is somewhere between the Samson Carbon (stiff keys) and M-Audio keystation (I loved the feel of the keys on this one).

The keyboard is all I need for my limited skill set, everything you wish is out there for free, I was hoping for a synthesiser and now have more than I can wave a stick at! Bitwig is an excellent DAW as well with great compatibility across operating systems, but the 8-track version is sort of a demo-level offering. Of course, the SE49 works with any MIDI software, but with custom Nektar DAW Integration you can do even more: Use the Transpose buttons for track or patch change, always have the currently selected track's volume assigned to the fader and turn the Octave and Transpose buttons into Play, Stop, Record and Rewind buttons.The SE49 makes an inexpensive MIDI controller for beginners, without the fluff and only the essentials. I bought it because I needed something cheap with bigger keys than my APK Mini, and it fits those two criteria - for me, it does enough. Useful fader, and another excellent feature is there's no need for a separate power supply, which is especially useful to simply connecting iPhone or Ipad (this keyboard uses less than 100mA.

You can also connect the Nektar SE49 to an iPad using the optional USB camera connection kit (not included), allowing you to use the keyboard with dedicated music apps. Additionally, it also comes with more knobs and assignable buttons, 4 each – which you assign to control pan pots, draw automation lines, mute and more in your DAW. Sure, it does the job – but the lack of visual indicators when setting up MIDI assignments isn’t too helpful. The actuation point is only partially down, so that unlike a piano, you don't have to bottom out the key to produce sound.
