I have recently bought the 5th edition of this book and I’m already feeling completely inspired to make up patterns and garments for some of the sketches I have had cluttering up my space for as long as I can remember! I think the fact that almost every pattern cutter that I know has a copy of this book speaks for itself! It’s made up of the instructions for drafting a range of blocks but doesn’t show us any examples of ways to adapt the blocks immediately. Obviously, a big feature of the book is the fact that all of the measurements are metric rather than imperial, which means that you won’t find any mention of inches, just centimetres. The last bit is CAD led design which is useful if you’re heading into the industry but if not then you don’t need this section! If it's the centre back, that would be cut on the fold, not seamed, and hence have no seam allowance included.

She is the author of a series of books on flat pattern cutting, and on this subject she is a major authority. Aldrich actually walks you through loads of variations (around 20-30) to each of the blocks and shows you how to change necklines, openings, collars, gathering, sleeves…I could go on, but you get the idea. My other criticism here is that the bodice block is drafted without any waist shaping, this is added as an option at the end of the section and isn’t done in the clearest of ways.

The thing that I would note about this book is that it has a fair amount of material geared towards uni students and those wanting to get into the industry. It doesn't cover draping or more complicated cutting but ultimately that's something you learn over time anyway.It also offers more advanced sections aimed at students who wish to have a career working in the more formal sector of the menswear trade. Part Four includes a chapter on simple grading techniques and also a chapter on altering patterns to fit the individual figure.
