About this deal

The horse can either be attached to the carriage or you can add in a brick and tile to fill up the space so the horse doesn’t look too weird with the carriage attached. The result deviates me personally again too far from the fan design and has too much color - especially turquoise, light blue and light brown. It may be the largest castle-themed set to date, but the colours and design aesthetics mean it won’t look too odd next to the rest of your collection, and nor would it contrast too heavily with any forthcoming Castle line that may (or may not) be in the works – particularly given a wider theme would likely need to appeal to a younger subset of fans.

There was also Black Knights Boat (1547) in 1990 featuring a Black Falcons' shield, yet the minifigs appear to be Black Knights -- which confused the heck out of me as a kid. While I’m definitely annoyed by vertical post on the third floor and the blue roof, both of these issues are relatively minor and can be easily fixed if you decide to modify the set. The compromise the designers made was for the best imho, it's cheaper and more people will be able to enjoy this great set. The one on the other side, however, is not secured at all so can be removed easily to access the interior. I think it is meant as a nod to Classic Castle, which used a lot of primary colors, but it really detracts from the finished model. The light brick is the standard solution, but I expect more a flickering LED and if you push the Bellows, the light intensity goes up. Underneath our staircase is a water barrel, or at least I would so assume, and we even have a milk churner in the corner.

Some of the larger sets have started to not only number the bags but offer a summary of the main phases of the build process before getting started. Thankfully, the characters that are in the box are all incredibly well-designed: the blacksmith’s double-sided head communicates so much through just his eyes and brows, the rest being covered by his big, bushy beard; the archer’s squint has her ready to loose arrows into the apple tree’s target; and Classic Castle fans will find a lot to love where the knights are concerned, because they’re bringing the ‘80s back in style.

As for the curved half-timbers, those are a simple and elegant solution to the problem of how to mount the half-timbers diagonally in a set-quality build. Could this possibly be intended to be farther north than Britain or France--in particular, Scandinavia? I would like to hear other’s thoughts, but I might be displaying this one with the carriage up on my shelf. Castle has always been my favourite theme (of course, I like many others themes too, but if you can only pick one theme I will pick castle most of the time) ever since I was a little kid, and I look very much forward to adding this particular set to my Lego castle collection.

Arguably the best looking Lego set, an amazing build and value head and shoulders above the Lego norm, I would get this ASAP if you're even slightly interested. The layers of pentagonal tiles are a real departure from his original submission in both their use and colour, reflecting the wider design choices of the official set. I do look forward to seeing someone mod it to include red terracotta tiles though, as that could look fantastic.

I think we could have done without it and saved a few dollars on the set or added another minifigure or two in. The real highlight of this stage is the gorgeously detailed wooden bed which has a nice looking checkered blanket in 28 Dark Green Green, 107 Bright Bluish Green Dark Turquoise / Teal, and 37 Bright Green. The set contains 14 numbered parts bags, a 15th bag without a number that contains some of the larger parts, and the instruction book is wrapped up. The original model was beautiful but it was unrealistic to believe that lego would release it as-is. A stone chimney stack carries smoke from the forge and interior fireplaces to the top of the house to be discharged through two tiny pots at the top which look inadequate for the amount the forge is likely to produce. But I thought to myself that it's one thing to see that on a modern building, but that it doesn't mean they ever did it when this set would have been an example of daily life. Each of the three ‘H’s – Heating, Holding and Hitting – requires the highest level of proficiency to make anything that doesn’t resemble a chewed-up dog toy. Whether alone or with friends, the Blacksmith's Forge offers great fun for medieval fans aged 4 years and up. And 6040 probably worked exclusively for the local military, while 6918 appears to have been forced out of business.
