About this deal

He seems to enjoy the freedom, too much, and does anything he wants - floggings, murder, and incest are all included - but seems to be totally inept at fighting unless it is bullying others. It's 1829, Jason Firbeck, a retired naval Leiutenant, recently widowed arrives with his family - Samuel, his elder son, Luke, his second son and Jassy his daughter - in NSW, where land granted by influential friends, supposedly awaits him. A strange world greets the Yorkshire family, one of Red-coats, convicts and a peasantry governed by a wealthy elite. By episode four, Jason concedes that his son's more brutal view is the right one and he somehow falls in line. Starring Oliver Tobias and produced by Tony Essex, the series is an epic adventure series set in Australia as it is being colonised.

Executive producer and former BBC documentary man Tony Essex died 10 days after the series was finished.

Light reading creases, some shelf and edge wear, small sticker tear to front cover, light foxing to inside covers and endpapers. part Anglo / Australian co-production that was two years in the making and told the adventures of the Firbeck family who are uprooted from their Yorkshire home by their father in 1829 following the death of their mother, and taken to the other side of the world to start afresh in New South Wales.

Filmed entirely on location, it is a tale of pioneering and achievement against bitter odds, in which a family struggles to carve out an existence in a land more dangerous and more brutal than the West at its wildest. The series shows the struggle for survival in the early days of Australia in all it's brutal, corrupt, lawless and miserable glory,no punches are pulled, and it makes the wild west look like Trumpton! pages; Novelisation of the scripts from the Yorkshire TV series charting the lives of a group of early free settlers in Australia.

Naturally all of the residual British military are cads, bounders and buffoons, though the convicts are often portrayed as decent of desperate men, still struggling to get an even break. Unlike books such as the exiles, the book does not focus(for bad or for worse) on the convicts, but on the free settlers and the ordeals which they also had to go through. He does an awful lot of yelling into the wide blue yonder, but he does it in a terribly posh accent.
