Although I have no distinct memory of when I first read Jeanne Massey's The Littlest Witch, I had no sooner picked it up on my train-ride this morning (subway, rather than commuter train this time), than I realized I was already familiar with it. At the school, a class of young witches are being tested with a question by their teacher Miss Snarly about the only element that can take away a witch's power for a year.

An imaginative story based around the entertaining antics of the Zep family, it is certainly relatable for anyone with quirky relatives.It's thanks to that that I have a reading background so different from what my blue collar roots would ordinarily have led to. The other witches explain to her that she's only become a good witch- and they would have been stuck with one, anyway. But Great Uncle Sempronio has one condition: if Asdrubale doesn't marry a witch within a year and a month of Sempronio's death, the fortune will go to someone else.

Recommended to picture-book readers looking for sweet, rather than scary Halloween fare, and to any child readers who has felt sad about being the youngest or littlest of the group. This would appeal better to those interested in seeing what life is like with a big, energetic family, rather than to those looking for an adventurous story full of twists and turns. She soon spots a songbird on the ground tugging at a worm, so again she uses the magic words and focuses her power on that bird, but this time it turns the bird into a frog. The story is a bit longer than the average picture book and I really appreciated the reveal at the end.This insults Brenda to the point where she uses her powers to change Brainy into a pig, who then goes squealing to Papa Smurf, who, at that point, is talking with Farmer. In the Smurf Village, Papa Smurf warns his little Smurfs about being around Witch Haven Conservatory, which, although is dangerous, is the only place they can find witch hazel. Soon, Miss Snarly dismisses her students, but she has Brenda stay after class to tell her how disappointed she is in that she's turning out to be a bad witch. I enjoyed Massey's story, which, although it has "good" and "bad" witches, manages to paint both in a somewhat sympathetic light. But when the conductor for the broom flying demonstration is missing, it's up to Wilma to save the evening. Soon Papa Smurf has his formula finished and ready to test out on the songbirds Brenda has changed, but, as he went into the forest to meet Hefty, he sees Hefty with Scaredy bringing the songbird that was changed into a frog.Alfonso Terrible is left a large sum of money by a dead relative – but the only way for Alfonso to get his grubby mitts on the cash is to marry a witch. Once you get past the unusual names, there is absolutely nothing to stop young readers getting lost in this funny novel with larger than life characters - I'm not sure when I last met a villain so disgusting! Some of the adornments surrounding the text pages feel like they could have been drawn by a child and it's totally charming. The illustrations for this Halloween story are beautiful, I love Adrienne Adams illustrations and these are some of the nicest ones I've seen, there are some wonderful details such as houses inside oak trees and toadstool seats that I would have absolutely loved when I was a child. I would recommend this to fans of Halloween, witches, friendship, and those who are upset about being littler than others.
