About this deal

She was the first in her family to go on to higher education, landing a place at Bangor university in north Wales, where she studied psychology, dabbled in acting and music reviewing, and decided that fame might be the answer. Fortunately this has become less of a taboo subject over the past few years, but still causes hostility and ridicule. L. Also showed me how set I am in my views, how up-and-ready to want to correct/criticize something I'm reading. I would definitely recommend this if you are interested in reading about feminism from a different perspective or am interested in trans issues.

This was refreshing as it can be so easy to paint all of society with the same, prejudiced, close minded paintbrush and continue to think that everything is going to shit, when in reality there are people like Juno who are championing for change and making a difference in how we view age old concepts such as gender. Her imagining through invented characters of new possibilities in gender and subjectivity acts not merely as a personal catharsis but as an extension of those possibilities to new readers, diversifying the young adult genre from within and redressing ‘how few LGBTQ+ characters there were’ in the novels Dawson was reading at the start of her writing career. Whether or not people go down the route of chemical or surgical procedures, and certainly for those people born before puberty blockers were able to help people who needed to transition not go through two separate puberties, it’s a hard path to walk that it’s unlikely anyone would walk if they didn’t absolutely need to. Ultimately, this is a good book that is part memoir and part feminist/social text about being transgender (with a focus on the UK), with some intersectional feminist ideas thrown in. The million copy bestseller, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and.Our mission is to encourage reading, inspire creativity, and introduce young people to authors and illustrators through live events across the UK! Other contributors and celebrities featured include Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, John Legend, Jack Monroe, Caitlyn Jenner, RuPaul, Laura Dockrill, Conchita Wurst, Andrew McMillan and Emma Watson. Juno has such a warm, witty, hilarious and non patronising way of explaining and sharing her story, and this book exudes so much positivity. To be fair to Dawson, this is entirely standard for the gender ideology espoused, but that doesn’t make it make sense.

In her spare time, she STILL loves Doctor Who and is a keen follower of horror films and connoisseur of pop music. Re-read March 2023 - on a re-read, the writing here presents as a little immature, almost as though the book is aimed at the YA market, which is great as Juno's experience is such a great learning resource for young adults. Her books often feature LGBT people, and Dawson has advocated for other books to feature more prominent LGBT characters. She recently gathered several of her LGBTQ+ peers together for a short-story anthology, Proud, which has just been judged book of the year in the Visionary Honours for diverse and underrepresented voices.

This piece of text, followed by the caveat that the book will subsequently to go ‘into a bit more depth’, nonetheless feels emblematic of the way that depth often functions in Dawson’s writing, commenting upon social issues with a simple finesse; a light touch. In 2018, Dawson wrote the BBC Sounds spin-off podcast Doctor Who: Redacted, which launched in April 2022. But people told me I was a boy and, as I had never seen or heard of a trans person, I just accepted it. Dawson is witty and engaging and really helped me understand how it is that women who transition as adults are NOT socialized as male.
