About this deal
Once the rest of the players have resolved the actions on their card, players draw back up to three cards, the first player (or captain) token moves to the next player and the sequence repeats.
Although it has all the hallmarks of a classic roll-and-move game, Jamaica manages to present players with tactical choices every round by means of the character decks. If the person does not have enough resources from their cargo hold to stay there, the player must go back one space and continue to go back until either they land on a space that has no payment or a payment they can afford. Morgan’s Map lets you hold four cards in your hand instead of three, meaning you’re far more likely to have the right card for the situation in front of you. During setup each player selects a character and keeps the corresponding character deck in front of them, along with a long tile containing five spaces, or ‘holds’, for goods (doubloons, gunpowder and food). Here’s what I do (Gloomhaven): rather than having 1 coin be worth X amount (based on scenario level), I instead put that many there. I don’t hate this change especially for newer or slow players it adds an element of luck that is fun and you could always play with the old rule instead.
If a loading symbol is shown (food, gunpower or doubloons) the player must load the number of tokens shown by the action die into an empty hold. The shove gets harder when you give me a box that looks like I’m opening a treasure chest because I am at heart still five years old and enthralled by shiny doubloons. It’s always a good idea to load up on food, money and gunpowder, but loading has an additional complication – whatever you load up can only go in an empty hold.Jamaica is a racing board game for two to six players centered on an annual celebration held by Henry Morgan, a Welsh pirate captain who retired from the seas to become Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. While there is conflict in the game as players battle each other and steal resources, it’s all thematic and never really strays into the territory of mean. Randomly select 9 of the 12 treasure cards, shuffle them and place them facedown on the space to the right of the navigation box. Each pirate cove comes with a treasure, and whoever lands there gets not only free berthing but whatever booty remains to be claimed. How else could the honorable Henry Morgan celebrate his 30 years of governing Jamaïca than with a race around the island?
