About this deal

Aquila’s Guitarlele String sets provide superior performance over traditional strings, these strings maintain their intonation better. As an experiment, I capoed my classical, with D'Addario EJ45's on it, at the 5th fret, and the tension on the GL-1 with EJ43's is notably higher. a tuning, as I frequently capo at the 4th or 5th fret anyway to suit my vocal range (when I feel like singing, rather than the usual fingerstyle noodling), and am not looking to go with any other tuning. We probably wouldn’t recommend going much higher than a 9 gauge in this case due to the string tension.

Perhaps the Yamaha web site was leaving implicit that I should be using 1/2 or 1/4 scale strings when they say "normal" classical strings? It’s actually common to find a single low G string for those who want to tune their ukulele more like a guitar with a low G).

Looking forward to your post, but wanted to pass this along: I have read on other forums of a clever approach to tuning E to e on the Guitalele without having super floppy strings, or even hard tension strings. If your guitalele doesn’t have bridge pins, I recommend using a G or A string from this set for high G tuning. So you’ll be able to play the same songs, it’s just it will sound higher in pitch than if you were playing a normal guitar.

That makes the string less bright, less responsive and more muffled: the thicker the string, the duller the sound. There are also some specialty sets available like standard E-to-E, high octave E-to-E, and with speciality materials like Aquila Reds, fluorocarbons, etc. The Guitalele is an instrument surrounded in mystique so let me debunk some of the confusion out there. I don't know if many of you have ever had the chance to play a Kanile'a GL6 but they are all a much welcome addition to any high end ukulele/guitar collection. That's the only way I can make sense of all the references to folks putting hard or extra hard classical strings on their guitaleles tuned to A. I'm eager to try all the other Aquilas once I can access my nicer full-sized guitars; right now I'm on a Cross 2. o. is absolutely thrilled with the new sound (and his favorite color happens to be red like the basses).
