About this deal

Full of action and danger, this book had me tense and hopeful that everything was going to turn out all right. The author’s passion for her subject makes for a powerful and memorable reading experience that will certainly not disappoint the many fans of the award-winning The Last Bear, providing a satisfying and credible outcome which leaves you filled with hope for both April and Bear. Beautifully illustrated by Levi Pinfold, Finding Bear is a stunning story of survival and a heartwarming tale of love that shows us how hope is born from the smallest of beginnings. The Last Bear by Hannah Gold was a wonderful book telling the story of April Wood rescuing a trapped and starving polar bear - despite numerous obstacles.

Many thanks to HarperCollins UK and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of Hannah Gold’s newest book, Finding Bear. But along the way, she discovers much more than she bargained for - a tiny polar bear cub, desperately in need of her help. It is one of the most gorgeous, moving, beautiful, breathtaking, perfect stories, ideal for readers aged 9 to 90. And while April’s friendship with a polar bear which she affectionately names Bear is the fantastical element of this series, April befriends other people (children and adults), who support her not only her dream to live in the Arctic close to Bear but also her mission to fight climate change. As well as showing the consequences of global warming, Bear and his cub also mirror April and her father.

They tell her they want to see the Northern Lights; Jurgen suggests telling her they're looking for a polar bear isn't a good idea! They would also only drop off a case of books and leave us to run it – it was so lovely to have you on hand to chat to the children and recommend them books, as well as the small (but appreciated!April believes that only she can help Bear and so begins an unforgettable journey across frozen tundra and icy glaciers.

Everyone wanted a copy and now they can all have the sequel which is an equally phenomenal and beautiful story. Seventeen months after leaving the Arctic - after she had established a profound bond with the trapped polar bear she found wasting away - April is having difficulty settling into "normal" life, as she is bullied at school, and is unable to understand why people don't care about the climate crisis and the plight of the polar bears.Thought the author explored really well the changing relationship between April and her dad and drew parallels in the story which were brilliantly woven. I absolutely loved the way that Finding Bear is an adventure story and can be accessed on that initial level, but is so multifaceted in the themes presented that the relatability for all readers is astounding. For some reason I don’t question a young girl being friends with a polar bear, but I do question her dad allowing her to go to the artic, and being there the following day lol! Her writing is perfect for teaching children about climate change, she doesn't hold back in terms of informing children of the terrible effects but everything is done in a sensitive way and they help encourage the younger generation to get involved in activism and be kinder to animals in general.

When she hears that a polar bear has been shot and injured in Svalbard, she’s convinced it’s her friend and persuades her dad to travel with her to the northernmost reaches of the Arctic. Also at the end there's a warning about not trying to befriend real polar bears which I enjoyed 10/10. April is a character that gives us hope for future generations, and reminds us that we owe a huge responsibility to try to rectify what is going wrong in the world so that her generation aren't left picking up the pieces - indeed if there will be any left. For April the adventures she had over a year ago are still at the forefront of her mind, she can’t stop thinking about Bear. I also loved how the book is making its readers aware of climate change and the effects that is has on our world and it’s wildlife. Some big changes have happened in April's life and her character progression as she learned to deal with and accept these changes was lovely to see. What follows is an unforgettable journey across a masterfully evoked frozen landscape, through glaciers and Arctic storms, as April becomes separated from the rest of the party, who are somewhat reluctantly pursuing her quest for Bear. Jurgen is stunned by their story and arranges for them to be taken to the area they suspect Bear to be.
