About this deal

As a young girl leads a cast of characters on a musical journey, they learn that they have the power to make changes – big or small – in the world, in their communities, and, most importantly, in themselves.

For about a dozen years after getting out of school, I did illustrations for greeting cards, theater posters and magazines.Beautifully written and even more beautifully illustrated 💗 A story of overcoming obstacles by working together to make a better world. We end as we began with our narrator on a white page, this time looking directly at us with an invitation to carry the song onwards and leaving the reader with a belief in collective action for positive change. Lots of metaphors in both, but the art tells a story that is accessible even to young children and adults who 'don't like' books or poetry. My favorite image, though, is the double-page spread in which the narrator is holding out a trumpet to a boy whose hands are covering his ears as though to block out the sounds or whatever he doesn't want to hear. The sessions could be added to with art activities and through further learning in PSHE, science, geography and history.

Yourself and Bob are much cherished in our booky world and I personally really appreciate everything that you do. This was a fairly short picture book and audiobook (only 4 minutes long) but it was still packed with lyrical verses and gorgeous illustrations. In each new place she visits, she inspires other children to use their voice (and instruments) to help others.

The two work together in harmony with each other (yes, the musical reference was very deliberately added in there), and in this book both the poetry and illustrations tell the story together. And that attitude can be contagious and impact our environment and communities in a very positive way. I think it is a lovely, beautiful book, and I think that you could read it with a 4 year old – and you know your child and what they would enjoy reading with you far better than I or any reviewer could do. What can you do to get others involved in speaking up about challenges or ideas that are important to you?Honestly, I've become an even bigger fan of Gorman's work over the past few months and SEPTEMBER CAN'T COME SOON ENOUGH!
