About this deal

We have found this in oldish engines when stripped, after only ever being run on it that the bore etc looks perfect!

That's 50 years, not bad when you consider all those Slick 50 type products that have come and gone over the years. I am not trying at all to be facetious with the following comments indeed it is of genuine life saving importance. Mind you, this Inter wasn't suitable as a ride-to-work nail in the colder seasons as it had no lights fitted. Within four years the Wright Brothers would take tentatively to the air, followed albeit somewhat belatedly by compatriot Samuel Franklin Cody at Famborough in 1908. Please remember to add the forward-slash and not to put in any spaces in between the letters and numbers. If many of the forum members had any idea what that means, I don’t think there would be any of the frequent complaints of ‘I can’t use the forum’, Len.

I have e-mailed Castrol to ask whether or not the sweet smelling oil 'Castrol R' can still be purchased and be used in modern bikes, I have pasted their reply below. There are various trains of thought as to which is the better of the two methods, in race engines castor based oils are frequently used as castor oils provide higher lubricity than mineral oils however castor based oils require more engine maintenance to prevent rings gumming up and deposits forming inside the engine. I fully appreciate it will add no performance benefit at all but I would love to gently perfume the countryside if I could do so without breaking my bike. He would be watching Isle man in his recliner with wofts of Castrol R like he was right there at the races! I used to think I was a petrolhead because I could syphon petrol and not gag until I saw my mate testing hydraulic fluid by dipping his finger into it and tasting it.

I dont know if id use it on a modern bike though also if your putting it in the fuel of a four stroke you will varnish the valves. You still catch the scent of the substance that made his company a household name in the early 1900s wherever older racing engines are exercised: that distinctive, heady perfume of Castrol R. I may be wrong of course but if I remember correctly then there is an alternative which smells the same. I’ve had no problem with sticky rings or anything of that nature but I have read of the “glaze” that it leaves on engine components. Growing up in the UK in the 1980's we tore around on our "Fizzies" RD50MX is what I had, RD125LC, RD250LC etc etc.Hi I have just bought a bottle of castrol 747 - it's says it's for Water cooled engines on the label - is it safe to use in a standed 150 cc engine? I do virtually no road riding, I only ride around the fens here and so maybe the hares, deer, foxes and general bird life might enjoy a slightly perfumed world! I've seen this A747 advertised so will get round to trying it after my present experiment, but what's Maxima 927? It can be used in racing engines, in gearboxes, as a two-stroke mix, even added to normal four-stroke engines and is made from the crushed seeds of the castor plant – a plant largely native to Africa and India. In an attempt to relive a bit of my days watching Villiers engined karting in the ‘60’s and Classic motor racing, I love the exhaust smell of Castrol R!
