About this deal

Females lay their eggs in groups around small twigs on the larval foodplants, which in both the USA and Europe are various hardwood trees including riverside willows as well as elms, birches and poplars. Immediately the pupa rids itself of the larval skin, it is so vigorous in its efforts to anchor the cremastral hooks firmly into the silken pad by its twistings and twirlings that they sometimes tear themselves away and fall to the ground.

A powerful flier, this species is sometimes found in areas far from its usual range during migration. All the same it is a good story, if a horribly sad one, a lesson in responsibility avoided or met head on. When the whole company are slightly on the move in the sun they present a curious sparkling mass, clue to the immense number of glistening black heads. Like many migrants, this butterfly does not maintain a sustainable breeding population here since mating only occurs after hibernation and those adults that do manage to overwinter successfully are so few in number that the chances of finding a mate is small. Once they awaken in the autumn (fall) they feed mainly on tree sap and to a lesser extent on rotting fruit.

Nymphalis is from the Nymphs, who were lesser deities in Greek mythology and were frequently forced into relationships by the Greek Gods. Breeding populations occur in Scandinavia and across central mainland Europe, but not in Britain or Ireland. All details of our collection are held on the main Plant Heritage database including plant name, accession number, date of accession and plant source.

The young willows and poplars could be completely defoliated due to the caterpillars, though mature trees tend not to be affected. Some of the butterflies' major predators include praying mantises, assassin bugs, dragon flies, and vertebrate predators such as birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Mourning cloak butterflies are not known to be significant pollinators, since their primary food source is sap of deciduous trees rather than flowering plants. Hugh Newman raised thousands for release at his 'farm' in Bexley, but none were seen the following spring. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. Near the base the surface is faintly ridged longitudinally; the base is firmly embedded in glutinous substance. The first was at Cool Arbour Lane in Camberwell (now Coldharbour Lane) and the second was a mile or two north at Newington Butts, in St George's Fields.

Thanks again for the great record which I’ll make sure is logged in the county database at the end of the season.By the 1960s everyone knew his name and the factory had become a very large building – making gummed paper in various colours and fancy stationery, as well as cardboard boxes for packaging items to sell.

Immediately below the spiracles are very faint crescentic markings, almost invisible; the tubercles of the previous stage are now developed into moderately long, black, spine-like tubercles, each terminating in a longish, curved white bristle, and numerous much smaller lateral hairs, and all the minute body-warts bear white hairs instead of black, as in the last skin; the head and legs are shining black, with fine white hairs; the claspers are amber colour. The Camberwell Beauty likes to rest in direct sunlight on dark tree bark where it can use its dark colours to absorb sunlight heat and also avoid predators due to excellent camouflage [3]. Mostly this stands up very well to being read two decades later but the occasional comment does not sit well. Each story is full of comic insight and realistic observation of contemporary British life and focuses on the very different lives of a set of characters living in the same street.I first read it several years ago and it has been languishing in my loft until a recent clear out bought it to light again. This was enjoyable but not as enjoyable as the others I have read - such a shame both main characters are not particularly nice and the ending seemed a little hurried - I would have liked one more chapter to give Anna a final ending. None of the premature stages have been discovered in Northumberland but presence of adults can fluctuate each year depending on how many migrants arrive.
