What struck me as I read through the reams of Salem depositions was how a young boy is asked, ‘Well, what did the devil promise you? When one of the competitors at the festival is murdered, Harlow will stop at nothing to try and find out who the murderer is. This isn’t a bad thing, as I liked the family dynamic well enough, and these characters have room to grow in later books, but I felt like if you were expecting something along the lines of The Dresden Files, but with a female protagonist, then you would be sorely disappointed. The magic portion was lighthearted and doesn't go dark and twisty like some other mysteries I've read.She tried various remedies including trying to churn the butter herself while whispering an incantation, as well as drawing a circle around the churn and washing it out with south-running water.

But things aren’t so easy when you have a couple suspects and a town filled with tourists for the festival milling about. That year the talk was again rife on the lips of the townsfolk, about the older women who had been accused in this second wave of persecution to drive out the Devil.

I’m not sure of all the details, but I know Aunt Cass has helped him out in exchange for him overlooking certain events the police might otherwise be interested in (such as her illegal fireworks business she was running for a while and sometimes starts up again when she feels like it). The portrait, such as it probably was, was taken to an old tree, and the best shot available fired the silver bullet into it. Good stories, quirky characters, interesting settings, and a nice mix of humor, romance, plausible magic, and mystery. You would make your wish, then tie a ribbon or similar gift to the fairy thorn, and hope for the best.He’ll never come right out and say it, so this is where we end up: an online journalist being asked questions outside her official circle of knowledge.
