About this deal

In Japan, it debuted at number 10, selling over 20,000 copies in its first week on the Oricon album charts. For Mono Masters, disc 1 uses a mid-1960s Parlophone label design and disc 2 uses the unsliced Apple label design.

The Revolver to white album series of records have the "tubey" cool shimmer of the originals which I lack on the 2014 lp's. Tracks 9–12 and 15 of disc two were prepared in March 1969 for release as a 7" mono Yellow Submarine EP, two months after the release of the similarly titled soundtrack album, but the project was scrapped, although the EP was mastered. The CD set also includes a 44-page booklet with an essay on the important role that the mono mixes played in the Beatles' recording career, notes on every track featured in Mono Masters, and a track-by-track listing of the recordings. By the late sixties, however, stereo recording for pop music was becoming more popular and, thus, the new standard. When you listen to stereo music today, and lots of older stereo music too, you don't normally feel like half the elements of the track are on one side and the other on another.

For decades, we've all been swimming in the great stereo sea, enjoying almost all of our audio content in stereo. The boxed set was released on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl on 8 September 2014, with each disc mastered directly from analog tape sources, rather than the digital remasters used for the CD release. It is important for people to realise that when Beatles fans say they prefer the mono mix to the stereo, they are not simply referring to the stereo version “crushed down” to mono. I love hearing the voices that come from different channels when it is not a single performer - a singer accompanied by an orchestra -, which, obviously, should be heard in the center. Thus, the songs that were originally released on stereo singles in the UK are omitted on this release. These are either "a revelation", "interesting", an "aberration" or "historical revisionism" depending on who you ask. The two 1960s mixes are generally very different indeed, and Sgt Peppers may be the most different of the lot because of the dizzying layers of special effects that were presumably very difficult to reproduce in stereo afterwards (the mono version was made first, and regardless of who did the stereo version later, even attempting to reproduce all those effects must have been a bitch).
