It indeed works more like other infrared grills than it does like a traditional grill, but the burner isn't actually anything different. Char-Broil Grill2Go Portable Gas Barbecue is the rugged, go anywhere grill that cooks virtually anything. Heat dispersal felt uniform and, since this is a gas-powered barbecue, cooking with the lid down is an option – this isn’t always the case with charcoal-based options. It was pretty much only in windy conditions, with the grill at its lowest setting, that we could cook a thick chicken breast "low and slow. There’s a lid-mounted thermometer on top, which tracks the BBQ’s internal temperature up to 350ºC, as well as two locks at the front to keep the lid in place during transit.
How evenly food cooks through, including whether the outside burns easily or cooks before the middle (evenness); whether it remains moist or becomes dry (succulence); how tasty the food is and whether it has that distinctive, char-grilled barbecue taste (flavour); how appetising the food looks and whether it has a nicely char-grilled appeal (appearance); and the overall quality of the cooked food. In testing, it heated in double quick time, too, with the BBQ reaching its maximum temperature of 350ºC in around five minutes according to the mounted thermometer. Consistent heat across the entire grill, although the flame is quite fierce, so you do not need to have it on high unless you are searing food.
Two chunky carry handles on either side make it supremely easy and safe to carry, and underneath the main body are a set of four chunky feet that keep the barbecue nice and stable while you’re cooking. I’d recommend picking up a good-quality wire brush, because the included tool didn’t quite reach all the nooks and crannies.My only criticism is that I was not offered the extra gas pipe and regulator, which allows you to run it from a large patio gas cylinder. The construction is robust, the portability is simple and reliable, and the high-heat cooking is top-notch. However, a good chunk of this (44 x 28cm) is grill surface, meaning you can comfortably fit enough burgers or hot dogs for three people.
