About this deal

The town itself, Low Town, is a perfect setting for a great noir murder mystery. Polansky does a nice job at getting the feel right. He characterizes Low Town, and as some reviewers have said, he places Low Town among the great fiction towns of New Crozubon, Villjamur, and Ambergis. It is a seedy place, a dirty place, and a place that can be the setting for an entire series of novels. Bridgnorth itself is a picturesque and historic market town that has its origins in the 12th Century. The town is divided into High Town and Low Town - High Town being set on a sandstone ridge one hundred feet above the river, with Low Town situated alongside the river and the two are connected not only by main traffic routes but also by several strategically placed flights of steps and an historic funicular railway.

Continue up the High Street and you will see Northgate ahead of you, the only one of the five gateways into the town which still exists. In the burgess’s hall above is a museum which, from 1st November 2007, become the first independent museum in Shropshire to be given accreditation by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and, if you’re visiting between Easter and October, is well worth a visit. The last ever Perry & Phillips auction was held in October 2018, but the antiques centre will stay open into the future.

Prior to the 1760s, North Shields was little more than a series of buildings which had been constructed along the riverside and referred to as the ‘Low Street’ with many of the houses, workshops, chapels and public houses piled up the banksides and reached by a series of steep stairways.

Quarrying only stopped in the mid-1990s and the last occupant was a concrete plant that departed in 2010. With the help of a local community group, nature has been allowed to take hold once more. In remote countryside four miles west of Bridgnorth’s High Town, Upton Cressett Hall is another splendid country house. Low Town was decimated by plague years ago; survivors have grown up, moved on, but still carry the horror of those days with them. The Warden is a street-smart survivor of those years. He went on to survive a brutal war conquering a neighboring city and a stint with the city’s law enforcement. He’s since lost his position as an agent, but his habit of sampling the product he sells helps him forget. When he discovers the mangled body of a dead Low Town child, he’s drawn into the investigation.

First Floor Landing - From the entrance hall, a staircase rises up to the first-floor landing. The landing has exposed beams and stonework on display. There are three windows to the rear elevation, affording a good amount of natural light. Even if it has changed a lot since Medieval times, Northgate is the last of the five gates that controlled the way into Bridgnorth.House Bathroom - The house bathroom is presented to a high standard, with attractive flooring, angled ceilings with spotlighting, and is fitted with a white, three-piece suite which comprises of a low-level w.c., a wash hand basin, and large double-ended bath with high-quality fitted. There is ceramic tiling to the half height and obscure glazed windows. I honestly feel a little bad that I didn’t like this. I mean the writing is there. It is really the type of writing style that I generally enjoy with some real depth to it. With this in mind, I'm a little torn about how Low Town answers this third question. On the one hand, the genre fusion of fantasy and noir is superb, and certainly uncommon enough to warrant being considered fresh. But in my mind, genre isn't enough. The story that was told, regardless of setting, follows the tropes of just about any other noir story almost to the T, including the plot. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that nearly every prediction I made was accurate, and some of my guesses were made very early on. Does a story always need to subvert one's expectations? Of course not. But the highest rating should be reserved for pieces that are truly transcendent; something that innovates and pushes boundaries in new directions.

Let me start by saying that 'The Straight Razor Cure' is unlike most books I `typically' read. While it's classed as fantasy, it actually comes across as more of a crime noir that just happens to be set in a secondary world - and this is by no means a bad thing. The novel combines different elements of various genres: we have a former detective investigating the crimes of a sinister serial killer, underlying messages about class division, a grimdark setting, and a few aspects of traditional high fantasy, such as magic. It's fresh and interesting, and an additional dark undertone is provided by the numerous parallels between Polansky's fictional universe and our own world. The Author Resource Round Table on Goodreads: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_folder/116489?group_id=26989 The secondary characters aren’t fleshed out very well. There is this instant going into the end and I’m trying to buy into why someone is taking children to sacrifice them and I didn’t have enough there to just go with it. I enjoyed the world-building. The society did borrow from some real world stereotypes maybe, but it's not a doorstop of a book and this form of shorthand is efficient in getting the reader's imagination to do some of the heavy lifting. Of all the contemporary genres, noir - and in general crime fiction - is probably the rarest to find out of its field, and that is because, although famous enough, it is much harder to adapt in medieval-type than modern times and in a story that will manage to hold the interest, making it one of the least developed among the dominant genres of epic/high fantasy. The property briefly comprises of an entrance hall, large dining/living room with characterful stone fireplaces and mullioned windows providing views over the property’s lawn gardens and towards the church, separate dining room/snug, a breakfast kitchen, and an externally accessed utility room. The first floor landing is particularly long and provides access to four double bedrooms, with bedroom one also benefitting from an en-suite, and a good-sized house bathroom. The property is situated close to superb rural walks and only a short walk away from Kirkburton’s bustling center and all its amenities. A character cottage, rare to the market and in a lovely location.
