Danclair’s is the newest opening from Brian Danclair, founder of much-loved Brixton Village stalwart Fish, Wings & Tings. Inspired by the hospitality of his grandmother Valentina, Danclair’s serves family dishes at a long sharing table in the centre of the restaurant, allowing for a convivial dining experience. The menu draws inspiration from across the Caribbean, Latin America and Europe, with dishes including BBQ pork ribs, empanadas with raisins and olives, and marinated grilled king prawns with tamarind sauce – alongside a weekend brunch. In 2007, Market Row and Brixton Village were sold along with the other London market interests of APL Ocean Ltd to London & Associated Properties. After getting to know the business and Brixton, we generated a longlist of names internally, inspired by local figures, wildlife, bus numbers and more. Market Row was the perfect choice, taking its name from the road in Brixton where many of the botanical ingredients are sourced and where the distillery is now based. The name situates the business and the brand in the heart of the community, and emphasises that it’s a no fuss brand that pushes the premium rum category forward, offering up an edgier, more inclusive alternative to mass-market rums. You might think the people best placed to ‘retain the diverse, fun and world-famous atmosphere of 414’ would be the very people who created it in the first place, but Hondo has made no offer to Tony or Louise. The crab bun arrived first, cut in half so it wasn’t just easy to eat but with an expectation of sharing. We wolfed it down. The chips were triple-cooked and seasoned with vinegar salt (who knew?), so we could eat them with the bun or later for dipping into the cream sauce of the mussels. The menu has four main sections – Likkle, Real Jerk, Yard Classics and Wraps. For the sweet tooth they have one offering – Rum cake and cream.The cauliflower was well cooked and the spiced green sauce is what it said on the menu – spicy – and the peanut sauce added to the thrill. We didn’t need the puffed rice. We finished the meal with a dessert to share – peanut butter ice cream with baobab crisps. We immediately dived in so no photo. The salty creaminess of the ice cream went really well with the surprisingly citrus flavoured honeycomb crisps.
