The Skull King game set includes handy score pads that allow players to log their scores neatly. There are two ways how to score this game: Skull King Type of Scoring The game presents two different ways of scoring, The Skull King and The Rascal, both of which are fun but I would recommend The Skull King for the best laugh per game played. The Rascals scoring is a more kind game with no negative points awarded whereas The Skull Kings feels really cutthroat and more pirate-y with more excitement and rewards for being brave.
When playing with just 2 players, a third hand is dealt to Greybeard’s Ghost (his hand of cards remaining facedown). He doesn’t bid, nor does he score any points. If they’re off by a single number, they get half of their potential points, but if their bid is at least two numbers off, they will not get any points. Displaying the bids this way saves a bit of time after everyone bids because each player adjusts their own cards simultaneously and they don’t have to wait for one person to deal out the number cards after each bid and then recollect them at the end of each round. The game is played over ten rounds with the first round being played with only one card each and then two cards for the second round, and so on until the tenth round where you play with ten cards each. Q: Loot cards require that both players get their bids exactly right or neither gets any bonus points. Is this requirement the same under Rascal scoring, or can players get any points from an off-by-one bid?
In each round, players get as many cards as the number of the current round (e.g., in round No. 1, each player receives one card; in round No. 3, each player gets three cards, and so on) If the first card played is a special card, the next suit card to be played determines the suit to be followed for the further round. One of the things we really love about Skull King is that up to 6 people can play — which makes it perfect for our family of 6. Starting with the person to the left of the dealer, each player plays a card from their hand. The first card played that is one of the 4 suits determines the color that the other players must use. However, if a player doesn’t have a card of that suit in their hand, they can choose to play a card of another suit. These cards are higher than all the cards of a suit (irrespective of the suit or value) and the Mermaid. So if I bid 3, then I’ll take the 5-9 card and place it facedown on the 0-4 card so that the highest number visible is the 3. The old bid cards vs. the new. Each player receives two bid cards (0 – 4 and 5 – 9; we’ll get to that shortly) and two player’s aid cards (with practical hints on scoring/features of the card).
Pro tip: In small groups, you can overbid since you should be able to estimate your chances pretty accurately. In large groups, underbidding is always smarter. After ten rounds, the player with the highest score becomes the Captain of the Seven Seas and wins the whole game. Rascal Type of Scoring I love the scoring and the swingy nature of who is leading. A good round can make up so much distance to your competitors if they have a bad round. Why We Love It: Skull King is a different game every time you play it, so it never bores you. Moreover, adults and kids love it equally, so it’s easy to settle on this game during your family game nights. What You’ll Need to Play Skull KingIn each round, players are dealt a number of cards equal to the round. So in the first round, each player will have 1 card in their hand. In the second round, each player will get 2 cards in their hand and so on.
