About this deal

It has an almost charred note to it. Little bursts of vanilla and some ginger fade in an out of the mix. It’s not the most complex Foursquare nose I have had recently but it has a nice balance and the notes that are present are nicely done. In other words, the taste of this rum is certainly not simple and you have to get used to it. The notes come gradually and I recommend a repeated tasting before reaching a final verdict. After about a month of tasting it, I find it excellent, but the path was not an easy one. I am glad to have given it other chances. The price and final verdict Differences from the rest of the Doorly’s range come with the new box (as pictured) which is an improvement on the box used for the Doorly’s 12. The box can now act as a total cover for the rum but can also be used to present the rum. Should you wish to do such a thing. Your points are extremely valid, and I would agree with you 100%, except that I felt the same way about the XO way before I got into cask strength rums . That said, I also did try to make it clear to whom such a rum would appeal, as well as providing other writers’ opinions so that people would not be entirely swayed by mine. The Doorly’s brand was acquired by Foursquare in 1993, and it’s possible that the emergence of the El Dorado 15 YO the year before (it was one of the first aged premium rum brands regularly and plentifully issued by a major house) might have had something to do with that; and much of Mr. Seale’s blending philosophy and barrel strategy made famous by Foursquare’s more recent rums is still demonstrated in the Doorly’s lineup, though I feel it’s currently being overshadowed by the Exceptionals, relegating it to something of an also-ran in a connoisseur’s cabinet. It’s a blend of pot and column still rum, some 90% of which was aged in ex-bourbon barrels, and 10% in Madeira casks (12 years in each). The final result is married for a short time (no details on how long) and then bottled.

With so many recent releases comparisons will be sought. I find both this and Doorly’s 12 to be slightly more “wood driven” than some of the Exceptional Cask series. This is for example more woody than the very Fruity Premise of Zinfandel Cask rums. More oak and less vanilla and sweet fruit. I was recommended this one as a really sweet, unsweetened rum. For those preferring Jamaican rums maybe, certainly not for the sweeter rum lovers! 🙂 Let’s say I have a complicated relationship with this rum. The smell has woody oak notes with sweetish touch of fortified wine. Chocolate, banana, vanilla. And other similarly full notes develop in your mouth. Oak, sugar, fruits, a hint of spices, especially pepper. Official sources describe the taste as: light, juicy, with dominant notes of oranges, bananas, vanilla, raisins and oak. Doorly’s Fine Old Barbados Rum Aged 14 Years is as the name suggest a very fine rum. For most other producers this would be the jewel in the crown. There best efforts. for Foursquare it’s just another great rum.Nosing Doorly’s Fine Old Barbados Rum Aged 14 Years will be a familiar experience for anyone familiar with Foursquare rum.

Distilled at a small family-run distillery that makes some of the most popular rums in Barbados, every bottle of Foursquare Spiced Rum is a hand-crafted blend of fresh nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and the distiller’s art. Refreshingly smooth on ice, Foursquare Spiced doesn’t contain the added sugar cane syrup commonly found in many other spiced rums. Foursquare Spiced Rum is an aged rum with hints of cinnamon, vanilla and nutmeg gently blended in at the distillery. The actual recipe is a family secret passed down through five generations. It is bottled in Hand Crafted European glass bottles with a hand dipped wax seal. The Rum heralds from Barbados – the island where rum was born. The closing three paragraphs of the Rum 66 review, published almost exactly a year ago, are as applicable now as they were then. When all is said and done this is another beautifully balanced rum – there is enough variety in all the Foursquare releases to recommend purchasing at least one bottle of everything they put out. I think that a lot of how you approach this rum and finally rate it will depend on where you stand regarding rums as a whole, and where you are in your personal journey. You like the Jamaican and Guyanese, or high power whites, or 55% agricoles? This might strike you as subtler, quieter, perhaps even bland. Prefer cask strength rums made by the indies, or Foursquare themselves? This one is likely to leave you frustrated at the untapped potential that never quite emerges. On the other hand, if growling ABV monsters and fierce pungency are not your thing, it would probably appeal in spades, be deemed a damned fine rum — and indeed, it is well regarded and held in high esteem by many, as a result of dialling into precisely those coordinates. Which is not to say I am not really enjoying this rum. I am, it is a great rum and one which will stand up to anything else on the market at the moment. It’s competition for a space on my shelf comes from its own brothers though. The ABV for this Doorly’s has also been increased – 48% ABV. So it’s not Cask Strength but it has a bit more oomph than the 40% ABV Doorly’s. It may be that the other’s Doorly’s rums are also increased in ABV. Doorly’s White is now available at 47% ABV and R L Seale’s also had the ABV increased to 46% here in Europe. Foursquare are now also using synthetic cork stoppers rather than real cork. There have been a significant number of complaints about broken corks (not just from Foursquare products) over the past few years
