About this deal

Once they have killed the pest for which they have been bred they die back to their natural numbers.

Slug collars - plastic rings with a lip to make crossing it difficult, placed around individual plants such as lettuce. One application of Nemaslug provides 300,000 nematodes for every square metre of soil, giving around six weeks control of slugs, this is generally enough time for seedlings and bedding plants to get well established. Whilst at this stage the slug itself and therefore the nematodes are likely to be found by predatory ground beetles, such as Pterostichus melanarius and preyed upon. These products are produced in high quality laboratories using state of the art equipment, by experts. The Large Red slug and Black slug ( Arion ater) are either orange-red or black with an orange fringe.

Mass producing nematodes needs specialist equipment, treatment and aftercare in sterile and bacteria free conditions. Most plants, once established, will tolerate some slug damage and control measures can be discontinued. Heavy applications of farmyard manure and other composts can encourage slugs, and so inorganic fertilizers should be used where slugs are a problem.

Slugs are widespread animals which can cause problems in the garden, eating holes in leaves, stems, flowers, tubers and bulbs. However, if because of dense foliage this is impossible, after application wash them off into the soil with some extra water. The natural active ingredient, ferric phosphate, is harmless to wildlife, humans and the environment. The Nematodes are supplied in a pack of 30 million and are a natural predator to slugs, to treat a area of 100 m2. Following the manufactures instructions scatter slug pellets thinly around vulnerable plants, such as seedlings, vegetables and young shoots on herbaceous plants.

If applying in hot weather it is better to wait till later in the day when the soil won’t dry out so quickly and the nematodes will have a chance to migrate under the ground during the night. When injured the animal produces a defensive froth of mucus to repel enemies such as aggressive small ants. They breed all year round with two overlapping generations, peak egg laying is March - April and September - October.Unlike Nemaslug®, many slug pellets do NOT work well during wet weather – exactly when you need protection against slugs. Unlike chemical pellets, the nematodes continue to work well during wet weather - exactly when you need protection against slugs. You just apply to moist soil when the soil temperature is above 5ºC (41ºF) and ensure the soil does not dry out for at least two weeks after applying nematodes.
