What I loved best, tho, was that this story was not a re-telling of a Greek classic as the books blurb may have suggested. In “Harridan” by Linda Grant (3/5; ⚠ animal cruelty) revolves around an aging woman who relies on her own resourcefulness to get her own way. I enjoyed the sense of inclusivity and representation, the richness that came with so many different perspectives exploring identity, gender, sexuality, patriarchy, femininity, motherhood, ageing, and more. The contents page reads like the answer to that popular mind game: Who would you invite to dinner, if you could invite anybody?

I listened to the audiobook alongside reading the hardback and there were multiple narrators used throughout, which I very much appreciated. Finding them enthralled by tales of cruel fate and bloody revenge, she even begins to worry that they are taking her lessons to heart, and that a whole new tragedy is being performed, right in front of her.

Nevertheless, Furies is a wonderful and very powerful collection of works by some excellent authors and the perfect way to mark the anniversary of an innovative publishing house which changed the landscape for women’s writing. Through some twists and turns, you delve deeper into mythology learning about the different gods and goddesses as well as demons who people continually fear and worship, sometimes under different names. And in a sense, the stories in this collection are an assemblage of themes and concerns about women and how they navigate the world, as it changes rapidly, but remain somewhat the same, and become even more regressive, in the way it treats them. it's a perfectly entertaining book - it held my interest and i wanted to see how it was all going to end, but it isn't really a "mystery" nor is it even "psychological suspense. Eleanor Crewes is an author, illustrator and graphic novelist who enjoys mixing autobiography into her graphic storytelling.

The teens –Ricky, Jono, Carly, Annika, and particularly Mel, an astute and intelligent deaf girl whose diaries punctuate the book – are inspired by the ancient tales of guilt, vengeance and self-discovery. The Amber Fury is a book I remembered fondly and have long considered a favourite, despite the fact that my review at the time – published on my now-defunct blog – contained quite a lot of criticism. Thompson gives us a fast-paced and action-packed adventure melding Greek mythology into the modern world. A celebration of womanhood through short stories centered on women with a mix of historic, tale, and of course magic, voices. Collection of 15 short stories, ranging from sassy story college-like Siren on roles on seducing man, to a sex worker whose also a mum, a woman in Victorian era gotta gave up her independence just to get married, and a man who ran because his dead wife decided to haunt him because he forced her to get pregnant and she died.

But to say that would be to undervalue the tight ideation and editorship that birthed this anthology.so, rather than being a The Secret History story of a charismatic teacher leading impressionable students astray, it's more of a "hey, maybe troubled kids should be taught by specialists and not just people who happen to know the director of a reform school" scenario. Overall I'm so glad I got my hands on this collection and there was so much spirit to it as a collection examining women in all shapes and stages of life (including menopausal and older women in Dragon by Stella Duffy) so I LOVED that aspect of the book. All he knows is that someone just left his niece tied to a tree, eyes gouged out, mysterious symbols carved into her flesh, and now they’re on a murderous rampage through his town. The collection opens with the marvellous Margaret Atwood who brings humour to her tale Siren, in which the Liminal Beings Knitting Circle attempts to be inclusive and allow all its members to co-exist peacefully. not a bad thing at all, but if you are looking for The Secret History knockoffs like i always am, know that this is not the same kind of narrative arc.

She then spends lessons discussing character and situation without apparently actually reading the text with them in class, but expecting them to do this for homework, which of course most of them don't do (surprise! And if they get a little carried away in the process, what’s a little extra blood and guts in the grand scheme of things?Alex brings her love of Greek classic plays to the classroom and slowly slowly the kids start to unwind. The Furies is deeply respectful of its subjects’ autonomy, including their self-justifications and mistakes. To celebrate their anniversary this year, that publisher, Virago Press, have released an anthology of new fictions, all of which celebrate and set out to reclaim the various derogatory terms which have been applied to strong-minded women over the years. Natalie Haynes, author of THE FURIES (THE AMBER FURY in the UK), is a graduate of Cambridge University and an award-winning comedian, journalist, and broadcaster. But Alex's enthusiasm for these writings (which I gather reflects the author's own), and the way she uses them to bring the kids out of themselves as well as, unwittingly, herself out of her blanket of grief, had me eager to learn more.
