showed that people drank lager 60 percent more slowly out of straight glasses than out of outward-curving (pilsner type) ones. There were a number of places in the book where I questioned whether Professor Nutt's statements were opinion or fact. This honesty and frankness is ultimately what lost him his job, but he is clearly a man of integrity. Alcohol is calorie-dense but has almost non-existent nutritional value - it can make up to 16% of female drinkers' energy intake.

Binge drinking of wine is more harmful than the drinking of wine with meals that we tend to see in places like France. From denying its classification as a drug to allowing alcohol companies to make up 50% of alcohol advisory boards, politicians’ response to drinking is surprising, especially given the burdens it places on our national services. He does discuss in detail the benefits of alcohol, and he recommends the development of such drugs as Alcarelle. With only 9% of Brits informed about basics, such as the drink driving limit, Nutt instead asks us to be more personally responsible for our levels of drinking and aware of the harm we could cause both ourselves and others. What I enjoyed most about his pragmatic approach is that he explains the impact of ANY amount of alcohol consumption. that the amount of alcohol optimal to provide the protection ["partial protective effect on cardiovascular health - The Lancet"] appears to be very low - about one unit a day. However, if you turn the GABA system on too much, it can switch off parts of the brain you don’t want switched off, for example your judgement or even your consciousness. No question about the quality and integrity of the data, with chapters addressing the whole range of people who are at greater or lesser risk. Cocaine and alcohol produce a new chemical coca-ethylene which stays in the body for longer and makes it more toxic to the heart which is what causes so many heart attacks. It can take a few weeks to remove all effects of alcohol from your system and let your liver fully recover. These were the places I expected to see citations, like throughout the rest of the book, but where documentation for an assertion was lacking. Although drinking in the United Kingdom has gone down slightly since 2010, overall consumption is double that of the 1960s, and Britons get drunk an average of 50 times a year.

Many of us know the feeling of wanting a drink after a stressful day at work or enjoying a Friday evening pint at the pub. Nutt, not to do it, and to try their best to keep in mind that they are not just talking to themselves. Alcohol – a simple molecule that can induce so much pleasure and pain at the same time… As the most harmful drug in the UK, it has a profound and wide-reaching impact on our health and on society at large. There is a lot of socioeconomic discussion around alcohol and in France there’s a way of saying that poor people drink a lot of cheap things and those are the alcoholics.

The beginning is the "why" alcohol does what it does, and the second half is the "how" one can reduce or eliminate alcohol use. Granted, one might never read the "why" section if they get through the "how" section, since the self-help portion is the reason one would obtain the book in the first place. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole of the book (Even if some sections like that of addiction were not relevant to me) and I just wished there was more. Like many British narrators (please note, Audible), toward the end of a sentence his words often become barely audible and also mumbled.I get the book means well, but really, it avoids the depth and profundity of alcohol’s dangers to both drinkers and their loved ones, and the pain associated for all. Only then can you make the right choice for yourself, whether that is to go alcohol-free or to drink in moderation.
