Upon reaching the end of the level, players are given a grade based on their performance, with an "S" rank being the best and a "D" rank the worst. [5] After completing an era, players must defeat two bosses: a "rival" character and a main boss. [8] Defeating each boss gives the player a Chaos Emerald, [c] and once the game has been completed, both Sonics can transform into their super forms by collecting 50 rings in a normal level. As Super Sonic, the player is invincible and their speed is greatly increased. However the Sonics lose rings while in this form, and will revert to their standard form when all the rings are gone. "Sonic Generations: White Space-time") is a platformer video game developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega in late 2011, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Sonic the Hedgehog series. While the game came out in home consoles and PC, an alternate version of the game was also released by Dimps for the Nintendo 3DS. All versions of this game can be played in stereoscopic 3D, but a 3DTV as well as a pair of 3D glasses are required for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, being the first game of the franchise to support stereoscopic 3D. Set across three defining eras from 20 years of Sonic the Hedgehog video game history, the instantly recognisable environments of Sonic Generations have been re-built in stunning HD and are now playable in both classic side scrolling 2D from 1991, as well as modern 3D style found in Sonic's most recent adventures. a b Turi, Tim. "A Suffering Hedgehog's Life Flashes Before His Eyes". Game Informer. GameStop. Archived from the original on October 4, 2017 . Retrieved October 2, 2017.Surprisingly, however, it's Modern Sonic that's the star of the show. Make no mistake, the familiarity of the level design and the quality of the action when playing as Classic Sonic is spot on, but because it's taken SEGA so long to produce an enjoyable set of three-dimensional Sonic stages, the Modern Sonic components of Sonic Generations feel like something of a revelation. Sonic Generations. PlayStation Store (AU). Archived from the original on April 3, 2018. Retrieved on February 14, 2022.

As if developed by another team that didn’t want to make a Sonic game at all, the night stages are slow, action focused, combo based, God of Warstyle gauntlets with RPG leveling elements. If that doesn’t sound like the type of thing you’d be doing in a series with the tagline “gotta go fast,” then you’re right. These stages just don’t work. Even if you liked that style of gameplay, it just isn’t satisfying in Unleashed, nor does it run well. The framerate just can’t handle these sections, snatching away what little hope this style of gameplay had of at least being passable. In the end, we got half a good-to-great Sonic game and half a monstrosity.

Each stage has two acts, one for Classic Sonic and one for Modern Sonic. The Classic Sonic stages are traditional, two-dimensional platforming affairs similar to the character's early adventures on Mega Drive. The platforming feels convincing and familiar, with the same physics that made the character's early outings such a success. Those that played Sonic The Hedgehog 4 will be all too familiar with how poorly the game replicated classic Sonic's core abilities — but that really isn't a problem here.
