By the time that was complete, Val had developed a taste for writing and began a series of historical cozy mysteries - Eliza Thomson Investigates. To top it off, the old lady was an awful person, making pretty much all of the villagers potential suspects. She bulldozers through the investigation with blunt questions, rather than discovering information through seemingly innocent conversation as Miss Marple would. He was found not guilty of planning to kill Mr Farquhar's neighbour Ann Moore-Martin but admitted defrauding her.

Thames Valley Police launched a double murder inquiry in January, more than two years after the death of Peter Farquhar (pictured above), 69, a guest lecturer at the University of Buckingham, and seven months after the death of retired headmistress Ann Moore-Martin, 83.

A 79-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a woman in Moreton, Wirral in the early hours of Sunday 30 October. I enjoyed it so much that I downloaded this second book in the “Eliza Thomson Investigates Murder Mystery” series to my KU library. A partly empty bottle of whisky and glass nearby and Field told paramedics he had “alcohol issues”, sparking a routine post-mortem that resulted in an initial finding of death by “acute alcohol intoxication”.

When a death occurs almost immediately after they move in, Eliza recognizes it as murder, not from natural causes, and realizes the police are not up to solving the case. Mr Farquhar was duped into it by Mr Field, who went on to subject Mr Farquhar to months of gas-lighting and coercive control, and steadily poisoning him, before killing him on 26 October, 2015. New TV series Sixth Commandment begins this week, telling the story of a churchwarden who murdered his older lover after gaslighting the 69-year-old into thinking he was losing his mind – then tricked a retired Bicester headteacher. Oxford Crown Court heard that Field moved into Mr Farquhar’s home in the village of Maids Moreton in 2014 and in March of that year they underwent a “betrothal” ceremony at a church.
