About this deal

The ultra-wide opening on our winter boots for dogs makes them easy to put on and take off, even if your dog is not used to wearing boots. But almost everything else—the entire middle swath of proprietary “winter rubbers” we tried—grip about the same. You can see how tough these boots are on the outside, but there's a lot more to them than what meets the eye. Footwear is built with nail-free construction to help insulate you from the ground to slow down conduction, but is not intended to be primary protection against electric shock. The Arctic Ice model that we tested was made of neoprene without any additional insulation (the neoprene did the insulating).

The boots also have an ultra-wide opening that makes them easy to put on and take off, even if your dog is not used to wearing boots. If you step in snow deeper than the boot, you get a foot full of snow (so much for all that waterproofing). You may encounter dry pavement, wet pavement, packed snow, fluffy snow, chunky ice, black ice, wet ice, slush, a slick cocktail of oil and grit, or some combination of all of these things. But you may not notice or care if you don’t regularly deal with large drifts of fresh snow, and the faux fur offers at least a small amount of protection. It can be helpful to begin by putting one boot on and offering another treat to reward their tolerance. They've proper heels, well supported arches, VERY comfortable and toasty warm as they're neoprene lined. But it’s so functional in other ways that we still think it’s a great option, and you may be able to mitigate this issue by wearing some tall waterproof snow gaiters. That said, if you wear them mostly on pavement, in cars, around airports, or indoors, it’s less of an issue. The Adirondack III and the Butte both come with the lining rolled down, but you can roll it up—up to 11 inches—to create the tall shaft we required of all our snow boots.

The soles of our winter dog boots are made from a special rubber compound that provides excellent traction. That’s the perfect combination of features for post-skiing or -snowshoeing, when you need to change out of wet boots, get damp feet warm, then probably drive somewhere. However, very few soles provided a noticeable difference in traction at all on smooth ice, except the Arctic Ice Mid and the Danner Arctic. It’s easy to dismiss these boots since people wear them year-round, but there’s no better boot for winter travel, winter driving, or après-ski. This amount includes seller specified domestic postage charges as well as applicable international postage, dispatch, and other fees. However, we wouldn’t take this pair out in deep snow—at least not without layering a tall waterproof gaiter over the open cuff. However, they don’t have any lugs or traction pattern to help navigate the ice you may encounter in modern suburbia. The wide, flat sole plants firmly against smooth ice, the nubby lugs grip textured ice, and the close fit of the lining provides stability.

My current pair are brown, last pair was green but DD borrowed them for the yard and she still uses them (must be 12+ years old). However we wouldn’t take them out in deep snow—at least not without layering a tall waterproof gaiter over the cuff. If your dog is active and loves to run, hike, or play in the snow, you will need a boot that is durable and provides good traction.

An SPR leather upper on these wellington work boots offers incredible durability and abrasion resistance. A polyurethane base and a layer of cushioning memory foam will cradle your feet for all day comfort.

Some factors to consider include your dog's activity level, the climate you live in, and your dog's individual preferences.
