About this deal

It's like Jilly is running out of ideas for characters in her books, so just taking the old ones and giving them new names and voila! The wonders of the last book I read with Rupert in was that he fell for Taggie and became a reformed man. The human characters are very realistic with all their flaws and strengths, and the animals in the story are almost human in their personalities. But in Rupert's obsession with winning he is putting more important things at risk - including his relationship with his loving wife Taggie. Both men and women are accused of being fat when barely over 10 stone and while I understand this is to with the weight needed for jockeys I think there could have been a better way to describe it than fat.

I also agree her nature writing is lovely and her older characters used to be flawed but they generally redeemed themselves in some way. I first remember meeting the great stallion that is Rupert Campbell-Black as an impressionable eleven-year-old and indulging in the delights of Riders and Rivals and living every moment of Taggie capturing his heart. They are long and complex with lots of characters with all the books in the series having characters from earlier books.

If, like me, you have never read Cooper before I am sure you will finish this one wanting more - I certainly did! There is also a cast of animals that runs to six pages, including “BLOOD RIVER: A South African First Season Sire in love with the vet”. Perhaps she should have walked out, which would have devastated Rupert and he would have dropped everything to get her back. Have read a few interviews with her recently - the Camilla Long one in the times was particularly interesting.Glancing up into Jan's film-star face, marvellously strong features, lifted by a huge smile, dark red hair visible in the V of an open-neck check shirt, Gav suddenly felt raped.

Absolutely everybody read Jilly – not just the world-conquering Riders, but all the way back to the Emilys and Olivias in their dainty 70s nighties. But the fact that there isn’t much of a plot doesn’t really matter, because that’s not what Jilly is about.Yet such responses are not miles off book after book of men falling over themselves when faced with an otherworldly female whose grace tends only to be matched by their silence. It isn’t as breathlessly compelling as Rivals – but then, almost nothing is – and there’s less sex than usual, although that word will definitely shake you up a bit.
