About this deal

The chief appeal of 'Margery and Gladys' is the first-ever teaming of two actresses who have been beloved mainstays on Britain's television screens for many years. Although Penelope Keith mentions "the George Formbys," his soundtracks are not used and he gets no screen credit. We've all met a lady of the house who thinks she a bit above everyone else (Penelope Keith excels in those roles) and the 'Mrs Mop' types that always seem to get the upper hand in the end. Wealthy housewife Margery and her rough-diamond cleaner, Gladys, disturb a burglar, knock him unconscious in self-protection, then panic and leave him for dead.

Penelope Keith (classy as ever) has played society matrons and snobbish beldames in several long-running sitcoms. After a night on the town at nearby Blackpool, the two women take the boat and sail off to the Caribbean. In Gladys's car, the two women decide to try to reach Margery's son Graham in Milton Keynes, hoping he'll give them shelter and money, but the trip turns into a comedy of disasters. Because the intruder was attacked from behind, a controversial court decision found Martin guilty of homicide; he served 18 months in prison before the conviction was changed to manslaughter and he was released with time served. A further shocking revelation takes the pair to Blackpool where another truth is revealed, leading to a genuine friendship and an end to their troubles.

However, with money short and Gladys needing medication, the duo is forced into a surprisingly full-blown crime spree, proving more than a match for an unlikely pair of policemen, Detective Inspector Woolley and Detective Sergeant Stringer. What follows is a comedy of misunderstandings in which these two very different, mature ladies are led on an unfortunate series of incidents which snowballs into a crime spree. They prove to be more than a match for the unlikely pair of policemen, DI Woolley (Roger Lloyd Pack) and DS Stringer (Martin Freeman), who are left to solve the ladies disappearance and puzzling string of crimes which follow.

Be sure to watch the closing credits where all the characters' stories are wrapped up in a series of post cards. Ms Keith plays Margery, a tetchy suburban matron -- recently widowed -- who attends a Neighbourhood Watch meeting that leaves her paranoid about burglars. Their uneasy alliance is made uneasier when Margery learns that her late husband Eric had a 20-year affair with Gladys and the discovery profoundly affect Margery's son Graham. Trinians, of course the many Carry Ons and the numerous TV series' movie outings from the 1970s onwards. The George Formby impersonators in Blackpool sing Formby's hit "Leaning on a Lamp Post" several times and also during the closing credits along with his "My Little Stick of Blackpool Rock. When wealthy, recently-widowed suburban housewife, Margery (PENELOPE KEITH), and her rough diamond of a cleaner, Gladys (JUNE BROWN), disturb a house burglar, they knock him unconscious, panic and leave him for dead, fleeing in the cleaners wrecked old car. With the police, led by about-to-retire Detective Inspector Woolley ( Roger Lloyd-Pack) on their trail, the two women drive to Fleetwood, only to meet the childhood friend. Remake of the 1961 Disney comedy about separated identical twins who meet at camp, change places and hatch a plot to reunite their divorced parents. Together, over a period of several months, they pursue a mutual sexual passion whose inevitable stages unfold in counterpoint to nine live-concert songs. As the police net tightens around them, the two very different, mature ladies are propelled on a shared voyage of self-discovery as skeletons fall from the closets forcing both women to reflect on their past lives.

It is easy for the frequent viewer of television to become pessimistic about the future of the medium. Aside from hiding from the police, they have to deal with Brown's diabetes and the fact they left the house without any money or credit cards. This was in essence an hour long comedy, but as it was the humour becomes clichéd and the whole thing becomes laboured. Penelope Keith plays her usual middle class lady looking down upon all and sundry but her character is one dimensional and there is only so many times that you can chuckle at her snobby sarcasm and her superior tone of voice. Margery and Gladys' is (among other things) an intentional parody of 'Thelma and Louise', with two unlikely matrons as female outlaws. June Brown has had a long stint as chain-smoking whinger Dot Cotton on 'EastEnders': unlike Ms Keith, in real life June Brown *is* a great deal like her most well-known role.

It was subsequently repeated on ITV3 on 6 March 2016, its first repeat in the United Kingdom since its original broadcast in 2003. A neglected housewife makes an unexpected friend at a nursing home, where she hears a true tale about an independent woman in 1920s Alabama, who ran the town diner, served food to people of color and protected her sister-in-law from an abusive spouse. As the women race across the countryside in a beat-up Fiesta, they each learn a whole lot about each other, even though Brown has been Keith's cleaning lady for decades. If you enjoy the genre of the 'classic' British comedy that this movie definitely belongs to, you won't be disappointed. Like any good drama and comedy, there are laughs along the way when they run out of money, break into a pharmacy, etc. B. worked their 'unlikely ladies double act' off perfectly, with Penelope's slightly snobbish employer of June's cleaner character. For those who know Penelope Keith only as Margo or Audrey from TV, her dramatic moments in this film will be a real eye-opener. Starring Penelope Keith and June Brown as the title characters, it was produced by Carlton Television for ITV and directed by Geoffrey Sax.
