About this deal

Though Ravilious' work is never going to set the world alight, it certainly warms my heart and is a delightful feast for the eye. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. First edition, sole impression; 8vo; 24 colour lithograph plates and plain wood-engraved title vignette by Eric Ravilious; publisher's pictorial boards, with the 'transmatic' dust jacket and printed card flaps, a superb copy in the rare cellophane dust-jacket with printed paper flaps, cellophane shrunk as usual with front flap separated, nevertheless a stunning copy of a vulnerable book.

Founded by Simon and Angie Lewin in 2005, our online gallery presents a selection of limited edition original prints – available for purchase. This is a beautifully produced book worthy of a place on every lover of English landscapes bookshelf. He went on to become Head of Drawing and Painting at Gloucester College of Art (1931) where he taught until his retirement in 1963. Although the book was not a limited edition, the destruction of the lithographic plates during the Blitz meant that only 2000 copies were ever printed.

As a student he visited Fry’s (1910) Post-Impressionist exhibition at the Grafton Galleries, and whilst he was enthralled by the use of colour, he judged the work neglectful of content. Tonk’s teaching bred a formidable tenacity in his students, and a diversity of approach which was apparent throughout Shephard’s career. Due to encouragement by his tutor Paul Nash and later to financial pressures, Ravilious turned his hand to a wide variety of creative work, from designs for ceramics, glass, furniture, murals, and textiles, to illustrating books, pamphlets, and posters. The 103 third parties who use cookies on this service do so for their purposes of displaying and measuring personalized ads, generating audience insights, and developing and improving products. The book was never reprinted because the original plates were destroyed in a bombing raid in 1942 (in the same year Ravilious, who was a captain in the Royal Marines and an official war artist, was killed in action).Ravilious had initially proposed it to the Golden Cockerel Press, with whom he had previously worked, but they were unable to undertake such an ambitious project whereas Curwen's great interest in the area of lithography saw them subsidise the project. Probably the most comprehensive book on Ravilious which will doubtless sell out at the Dulwich exhibition next year. This book explores his appreciation of the natural world and the techniques he used in a variety of media to convey those elements. This out of print Eric Ravilious book accompanied an exhibition at the Imperial War Museum, London, in October 2003.
