About this deal

We welcome respectful dialogue related to speculative fiction in literature, games, film, and the wider world.

You still get all the juicy character interactions you have come to want from the series, but again, Empire of the damned follows a more old-school story structure and is setting up a considerable conclusion. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. The pacing is incredible, some of the characters are wildly interesting, the story is well-designed and the lore has a depth to it that feels real and grounded. And then, he decided to use three words for every situation and sentence, no matter how random and awkward they’re placed.

Drawn into an uneasy alliance with the mysterious vampire Liathe, Gabriel must now deliver the Grail to ancients of the Blood Esani, and learn the truth of how Daysdeath might be finally undone. But instead, 458/739 pages in, I’ve realised this is likely to be the last time I read a book by Jay Kristoff. It didn’t feel accessible, like it was purposely making me aware that I’m a queer woman and I shouldn’t be here. Every character, every scene - even setting, which plays a huge role the story - are ramped up to 1,000.Spice things up with a duology or, with the amount of content, maybe split it into TWENTY NORMAL SIZED BOOKS? For me, I had already read and loved Nevernight, that couldn’t be erased, but how I behaved and reacted could be controlled and done in a way that was respectful of those who were hurt. The EotV series has designed itself as a long, sprawling epic that has earned its right to take its time and let you sit in its world, soaking it all in. It took me almost 400 pages long of Empire of the Vampire to feel like I’ve gotten to know and like Gabriel more as the main character. The way Gabriel constantly says he’s a bastard or asshole, and then he wanted his chronicler to acknowledge this multiple times (which he did and Gabe was so proud of them) made me cringe and eye-rolled so hard.
