About this deal

It's not often I read a book just for the joy of the words, and while this isn't the strongest of his form (I'd probably pick the Hellbound Heart for that), it is evident as you read it.

Weaveworld is a 'lost tribe' story and again, in Cabal, the story is very clearly a 'Moses and the Lost Tribe' tale. This reasonably satisfying read tells the story of Boone, a man who is framed by his sadistic psychiatrist for a whole host of grisly murders her didn't commit. Cabal is almost a more traditional horror story compared to his other novels, it lacks the grand scale of Weaveworld for example. Baphomet, the creator of Midian, re-baptizes Boone as "Cabal" and grants him new power, tasking him with finding a new home for the Night Breed, a task he accepts. In 1932, a few weeks after penning the words above, he was executed for sedition, and his body was buried in an unmarked grave somewhere along the shores of Italy's Lake Como. His style of writing is fantastic, and does often make me despair that I'll never be able to match his talent for prose. Boone remains human until he is bitten by Peloquin but he then instantly feels empowered and, in time, comes to accept his place within the tribe and his responsibility for rebuilding it. Although Nightbreed in its poorly marketed and confusingly edited state failed at the box office on release, it found new life in the comic book adaptations from Epic and found an audience on VHS and later DVD which, increasingly educated that the version they held in their hands was not its author's true vision, developed into a devoted following.

No space is wasted on describing Boone's background or profession in Cabal and, while we know Lori works 'in an office,' we are not even told her surname. Cabal is overflowing with symbolic dualities: life and death, day and night, humans and monsters, sanity and illness, there definitely is something going on there. For these same reasons, I'm inclined to read the monsters of Midian as an exaggerated representation of humanity at large rather than any portion of it. Boone’s only refuge now was Midian – that awful, legendary place which gathered to itself in its monstrous embrace the half-dead, the Nightbreed. Esta ciudad, resulta ser un santuario en las catacumbas, donde habitan ocultos seres de apariencia monstruosa.

I wanted to set up a classic stalk-and-slash psycho on the loose - Decker - against the historical, mythological and fairy tale version of 'the monster' which is what Boone and the Nightbreed are.
