About this deal

You'll find this review helpful in narrowing down your options in a market full of excellent chairs. We feel that the blend of height and weight hits a sweet spot for a backpacking chair that doesn't require a deep squat to get in and out of.

Despite its heavy weight, the Crazy Creek PowerLounger does have a compression strap just for this purpose and is very convenient to roll up. The deep-pocket seat means that it's comfortable to sit with your legs in a variety of positions, and your backside won't slide forward. If you don't mind a bit of extra weight, this model offers unmatched comfort wrapped up in a reasonably small travel size. But if you're looking to shave off some weight, the 2 ounce Therm-a-Rest Z Seat is the lightest in our lineup.

That would make sense, since the company makes some of the best ultralight backpacking gear around, including the award-winning Copper Spur, Tiger Wall and Fly Creek tents. Setting up these backpacking chairs is by no means difficult, but some models have the setup dialed in. The Skyline UL Chair packs small, assembles quickly, and gives you the comfort you need to enjoy the backcountry spot you worked so hard to get to. For minimalist packers who want to travel extra light, the Big Agnes Skyline UL Stool offers a comfy seat wherever you go.The Big Agnes Skyline UL Chair and Big Agnes Skyline Stool are excellent; they both have a broad base that creates a secure sitting experience.

Twisting chairs are also less comfortable, primarily because they tend to have a smaller sitting surface and no backrest, as is true of the REI Co-op Trail Stool. Backpacking enthusiast and lead reviewer, Elizabeth Paashaus has spent hundreds of mornings, evenings, and lunch breaks seated on the ground, which is enough to appreciate the comfort afforded by a lightweight camp chair. The Skyline, at 29 ounces, lands about in the middle of our testing group; lighter than all but a couple of the tent-style chairs and on par with the suite of taco-style chairs we tested. We knock a few points off the score in this metric because, while excellent in regards to stability and reduced pack size, the hubless poles take a little extra care to assemble. The Therm-a-Rest Trekker Chair Kit is similar in that it relies on tension from leaning back in it, but it also has a much broader base than Crazy Creeks. The frame of the chair is made up of some different size and shape poles so it took a little getting use to. The backrest of this chair is a bit lower than ideal, coming in just under the shoulder blades of our 5'8" tester. With our line of Camp Furniture, you'll find a lot of similarities with our camping gear: simple and intuitive setup; thoughtful, innovative design; and comfort to the highest degree. The angle of repose is adjustable with a sliding buckle, and we found the models that allow you to cinch by pulling down rather than up to be the easiest to use.

This model offers everything you could want in a backpacking chair and is as close to perfection as we have found. The Big Agnes Skyline UL is our favorite backpacking chair thanks to its comfort and stability in a small package. Ultralight nylon 70d Robic™ with nylon 66 rip-stop for extra tear strength – seriously get your hands on this stuff and you’ll feel how strong it is, particularly at the pole inserts. By evaluating comfort, size, weight, stability, and ease of use, we feel confident that you now have the information you need to select the best chair for you.
