About this deal
Antonia has learned early on how to be invisible so not to cause any more difficulties and tried to hide from her father’s resentment. She already had dreams of becoming an actress at eighteen, but had no luck getting parts, despite her striking beauty.
I did find this an interesting set up, but again it left me feeling like I had scratched the surface only. Talk about a disfunctional family, mom and dad were a total mess, and it is truly amazing that Antonia turned out so completely good and normal. Some mental health counselling prior to this point in the story would not have gone astray - but those are my personal feelings.
I again can't emphasize enough how well adjusted and likable Antonia is after being so neglected by her mother and then her father. Antonia Adams is the product of a loveless marriage between a beautiful young model and an aristocrat. She would sit alone in her room for hours, reading a book, or playing with her dolls, or just daydreaming and looking out the window, wondering about the people she saw walk by.
She had full breasts and a tiny waist, long slim legs, and coiled her dark hair in a knot at the nape of her neck. Her step mother was wonderful but the dad was still ignoring her, even he made her to feel no space for her at home. He was from an old, respected family whose fortune had dwindled slowly over time, but there was still enough left for his widow and son to live in a decent neighborhood in a nice apartment in the East Eighties in New York, and for Brandon to get a good education at Columbia, and go to business school after that. The story was good, but there were no big moments (happy or sad), so I'll stick with 'pleasant' as my novel descriptor. She learned to disappear, to hide in the shadows, to make herself so small and stay so silent that they forgot she was in the room.
