About this deal

I’ve included the leaked specs further below but more details are coming in as I write. Other than the inevitable price, size, weight and battery subtleties, the essential differences to the Epix 2 are twofold. F irstly there are (more) premium material options and secondly, the watch will be available in Garmin’s usual 3 sizes rather than just the one size we had before. We can also note the presence of 3 dial sizes for the epix Pro (Gen2) model, knowing that the non-Pro model only offered a single size of 47mm.

If you spend a lot of time outdoors exploring, this is the kind of free face to have loaded up onto your Garmin. This weather-centric face looks great on the Fenix series and the Garmin Enduro, pulling in current conditions from openweather.org. It's free, but some metrics are paid for – and after 7 days those advanced ones will stop working. But you can customize the watch face so you can show free ones only. Next, there’s the AMOLED touchscreen on the Epix series. The touchscreen comes in three sizes, with the Epix Pro using the same display as the previous Epix:

Garmin Fenix 7 Pro

I was an AW owner for 2 years (until the battery died) between owning Garmin Fenix watches “all my life” and during that time I was missing most of the features of a Garmin Fenix. Mostly the recovery metrics and the load metrics. Because I really use that to shape my weekly training.

While the sensors are outstanding the calculations done are abysmal depending on what you do. Normal running is fine. Even some speed work. But once you get into the terrain of intense HIIT or sports with a lot of fast switches between short but high to extreme load followed by relaxation the metrics start to be off so much that training data is unusable for me most of the time. Take for example calories. Here the AW would be off by 2-4x what the Garmin shows on such high intensity training. I know that at least for me the Garmin metrics is the more correct one because I try to eat all my calories every day. And my weight is pretty constant with the Garmin while with the AW I would gain weight fast. And not from muscle. Generally speaking, though, we've found you'll get around 5-6 days of decent use with the Epix Pro's always-on display turned on, with the option to extend that to around 14-16 days if you turn it off. The new Hill Score feature that measures your ability to run uphill is less likely to interest cyclists than the Endurance Score. That latter detail is crucial, in our view, because it means you can still get a Fenix-level battery if you're willing to make a compromise on the display (which, technically, you'll already have to if you choose a Fenix instead of an Epix). Just as Apple has moved into Garmin territory with the Watch Ultra, the best Garmin watches have similarly adopted smartwatch features to make them better all-rounders –and the Garmin Epix 2 Pro could be its most powerful so far. Both take around two weeks of full-time and wear before appearing, and will then deliver a constantly updating graph of how your endurance or hill skills are increasing or declining. These models are named Garmin Fenix 7 Pro Series and Epix Pro Gen2, respectively. Tech magazine, WinFuture has already unveiled visuals of these new models without revealing details about their technical specifications or prices. For me, the very few edge cases where AMOLED is worse are far outweighed by all the cases where it’s far better – especially in dim lighting conditions (like indoors, or the entire time period of October to April in Amsterdam, where I live). Still, if you’ve tried current-gen AMOLED displays and it’s not your cup of tea, the Fenix 7 Pro is the exact same watch feature-wise with a MIP display instead.
