About this deal

Use: I’ve been generally disappointed with the speed of the stove (e.g. for boiling water). It is fiddly to light – you need long tapers or a special stove lighter – and if not used the canister tends to dry out even though capped with the neoprene pad supplied. The name alcohol stove should mean that you can use any form of Alcohol in the burner. Well, no necessarily is the answer to that one. However, it does not burn cleanly. Even burning one ounce of isopropyl alcohol left our mugs covered in a layer of soot. It was such a mess to handle and clean the mugs afterwards we don’t recommend it as alcohol stove fuel. Alcohol hobs may not be as fast to boil water as a gas stove, but they are still pretty good. We use one on Zest that’s as good now as it was when the boat was new 30 years ago and have no inclination to go to the hassle of installing a gas system.

Popular examples: Red HEET, rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol The two soot-stained mugs are the result of burning isopropyl alcohol. The copper-tinged mug is the result of burning Klean Strip Green Denatured Alcohol. The two clean mugs are the result of burning HEET and Crown Alcohol Stove Fuel. How to Find & Read an SDS Methanol/methyl alcohol: aka wood alcohol, methanol is toxicif consumed, as are its fumes, so take care As far as we can tell so far cooking with our new spirit stove shouldn’t be much different from the old.

Peak Post

Another option is the Wonderbag (pictured above) – a pot within a well insulated bag that will keep contents warm enough to continue cooking for several hours. The traditional "spirit stove" (alcohol or methylated spirits) consists of a small reservoir or fuel tank raised above and to the side of the burner. The fuel tank supplies the methylated spirits under gravity to the burner, where it is vaporized and burned. The shorter time to achieve a boil, the more efficient your stove, meaning you need to carry less fuel. Alcohol stoves that hold a flame longer mean you can heat more water, great if cooking for multiple people. Adding a windscreen to your setup helps funnel more heat to the stove. Open flame stoves are the least efficient, side or vertical stoves are better, and pressure flame stoves are the most efficient. Ethanol is an excellent fuel because it is made from organic materials such as corn or sugarcane. You might commonly hear Ethanol being referred to as a bio-fuel and considered a more eco-friendly fuel.

Alexis Soyer (1851). The Modern Housewife: Or, Ménagère. Comprising Nearly One Thousand Receipts... Simpkin, Marshall, & Co. Bad for "cooking": They may excel at boiling water, but alcohol stoves are not great at cooking because they have a fixed flame setting.

Other Types of Backpacking and Camp Stoves

Using a kitchen scale, I filled each mug with exactly eight ounces of water and each stove with exactly one ounce of fuel. Another positive is that it doesn’t produce any toxic fumes. This is great because the last thing you want to deal with is health risks from using a fuel that produces toxic gases.

Increasingly common on yachts with big battery banks and large arrays of boat solar panels, the power draw means they’re unlikely to suit most of us, unless connected to shore power, when a low-cost portable unit, like IKEA’s Tillreda (pictured above), can be used. However, there are a couple of alternatives that cook food in a similar way, without needing on-going power. Remove the lid and simmer ring, fill the burner with spirit fuel, max. 2/3 of its height (approx. 100 ml). Place the burner in the lower windshield of your Trangia stove – or one of the other stoves in which the burner can be used – and light. It takes a minute or so before the burner reaches full effect. The sides of the unit are fairly thin stainless sheet and we were concerned that the screws could vibrate in their holes, making these oval and weakening the joint. It is the perfect stove for one person but is not designed to cook for a family. Canned Heat – Alcohol in a Disposable Can The 030L is the largest and most versatile in the range and offers an enamelled top plate hob with two burners, a grill underneath and a deep oven. Hinchliffe, Emma (June 20, 2016). "Entrepreneur overcame hardships of Chinese prison". Houston Chronicle.

Two ounces of alcohol will burn for 10-15 minutes depending on the type of alcohol you are burning. In addition to the safety aspect, the fuel is far cheaper and very easy to source. As a result, some of the extra up-front costs can be recouped over time. Notwithstanding that it’s a relatively expensive piece of kit, it’s a great product of which I could recommend, particularly if space is at a premium.”
