About this deal

This is, of course, most apparent during the "Dawn of Man" section where the dry desert sand and rocks are lavished in a variety of sepia, Hazelwood, tawny, and mocha shades. I'm no longer impressed enough by beautifully shot spaceships simply to watch them slide by for minutes at a time in the same way I won't run out of the theatre if I see a train approaching me from the middle of the screen. A bestial group of pre-humans live their daily lives in fear until they stumble upon a black, rectangular monolith. in some instances (notably the quote from Also Sprach Zarathustra) are probably endemic to the original recordings. And the color preservation is rich and vivid, evident from the kaleidoscope portal of colors and by HAL 9000’s ominous red eye, never looking so sinister.

Clarke) fi rst visits our prehistoric ape-ancestry past, then leaps millennia (via one of the most mind-blowing jump cuts ever) into colonized space and ultimately whisks astronaut Bowman (Keir Dullea) into uncharted space, perhaps even into immortality. The stark contrast between glowing human-made space stations and vehicles and the blackness of space, notably lacking overly-twinkling stars because 2001 aimed for scientific accuracy as much as possible.

Even the Dawn of Man sequences (which have proved challenging for other releases of the film) look remarkably realistic and ‘new’ thanks to the way the 4K Blu-ray’s extra brightness makes the bright skies and sun-drenched landscapes look far more vivid and natural. The increase in detail, depth and, for want of a better word, granularity in the picture is just gorgeous. Taken from the original 65mm negatives, it was hand-cleaned and tidied up and rebuilt using the original colour notes and references – and, man, it looks bright and focused, and retells us of the quality created. Other iconic scenes in Kubrick’s vision include the realisation and creation of the corridor sequences, which might be my favourite of all – mainly because I look at them now and have no idea how they look so convincing. Clarke and director Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey begins with an extended vignette about human evolution.

The HDR highlights and shadows are tremendous, from the brightest highlights to the deepest blacks, without losing detail in the shadows of deep space. So don’t expect trouser-flapping bass or carefully placed effects to start zinging around your living room. Maybe even more exceptional than the sensitivity but also drama of the HDR and wide color work, though, is the 4K grading. There are a few patches of silence, especially in the first half of the film where the two actors weren’t involved with the shoot.
