About this deal

I expected to enjoy a book with historical, literary, and genealogical elements in an enjoyable setting more than I did.

With a feminist, socially conscious spin, McDermid vividly contrasts marginal subsistence in London’s dismal Marshpool neighbourhood with the Lake District’s bucolic lifestyle…this could be McDermid’s breakout book. An intriguing, 200-year-old mystery propels this multilayered stand-alone from British author McDermid set in England's Lake District. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others.

Jane Gresham is a postdoc who is an expert on William Wordsworth, and she grew up in the Lake District where Wordsworth lived and wrote. Setting a mystery in the epicenter of a war zone challenges the genre conventions, but it doesn’t change the rules. When a body she believes to be Christian's turns up in the Lake District, she sets off to investigate the body and prove her theory correct. Jane Gresham és una investigadora d William Wordsworth, cree q hay unos manuscritos q tienen mucho valor y hará lo posible x encontrarlos aunque nadie la crea y haya vidas en juego. So, if the poem and any documentary evidence exists as to its provenance, the Wordsworth family have been keeping it secret for over two centuries. While Jane's investigation becomes ever more convoluted in a developing series of clues, local forensic anthropologist Dr. For another, the job she turns out to have been hired for—leading an investigation her new boss doesn’t feel he can entrust to his own force—makes her queasy. In response to this, she believes that Wordsworth wrote a poem about Blyth that she wants to be the first to find. Aside from the 11 days or so that are listed here, I've tried on-and-off to read this book for several years.

In 1984, after the traumatizing death of her closest friend, amateur sleuth and former reporter Lindsay Gordon left England for California. Between chapters is the Wordsworth verse of the Mutiny and Fletcher's explanation of all that happened, so that story is reveal slowly as well. She believes that the Lakeland poet William Wordsworth, a friend of Christian's, may have sheltered the fugitive and turned his tale into an epic poem - which has since disappeared.

Even without the melodramatic plot twists, the novel’s scholarship is exciting on its own terms, and entirely appropriate for a district so wildly beautiful that it attracts both poets and pirates. The literary chase, which leaves a trail of unexplained dead bodies, is a fascinating one with a satisfying resolution. My thoughts: In all honesty, I started reading this book three times and couldn't get into it before this last time. It's true that it's set in Hill's beloved Lake District, like his The Stranger House published a year or so earlier. The action drags just a little at the midway point but picks up again quickly, and you won’t guess whodunit until the very end -- or I didn’t, anyway.

The award-winning and Number One bestselling Val McDermid crafts an electrifying psychological suspense thriller that mixes history, heritage and heinous crimes.
