At the start of 2005, Ash toured Japan, [67] and in March and April that year, they embarked on a headlining US tour with support from the Bravery. The following month, the band appeared at the Skate and Surf Festival, and headlined BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend. He got into the practice of writing a song each day, saying the constant writing freed him from the pressure of needing every song he wrote to be "a 'great' song or a hit". All of the album's singles charted in the UK and Ireland, and "Shining Light" reached the UK top 10. Upon release Ash drew critical comparisons to works of China Drum, Compulsion and The Replacements, , whilst touring with allusive contemporaries Weezer and Smashing Pumpkins and many more.

Two versions were released in Japan; one that added "Tinsel Town" and "Everybody's Happy Nowadays" to the main album and the other added extra live recordings to the UK special-edition live disc.
