About this deal

Although this isn’t really a “horror novel” as such, it certainly takes influence from them during a few moments and, like a classic 1980s splatterpunk horror novel, this isn’t a novel for the easily shocked. We come back to the world of the LORDS and we have some parts of The Ritual told from a different POV which honestly is kind of funny to read but I loved it ok? This is my second venture into Shantel Tessier's world, and OMG, I wasn’t expecting to love "The Sinner" this much.

I struggle with books that have been translated because I don't know if they haven't translated well, or if I'm just not into the book. If you have triggers of rape, then please heed the authors warnings before jumping into this because her past is not for the faint of heart, it's heartbreaking what she had endured at the hands of many sadistic men.

Cora's world in all its variations stayed with me even when my schedule dictated I put the book down. Under her other writing persona of Caro Land, Caroline has stayed in with me to chat about Convictions and you can read about that this blog post. Now, I won't crown him the king of grey characters because, let's be honest, all he did was make promises he couldn't keep. And Easton, the obsessed man in the picture, had his moments of treating her like she was made of doormat material too. I get it for Germany, my Uncle lives there and he tells me that really is how people interact with one another.

I'm struggling because I just feel something is missing from this book and I'm not quite sure how to put it into words. These autopsy scenes, along with a couple of more ominous moments, also help to add some elements of horror to the story whilst also introducing various medical mysteries and/or tantalising clues for Rizzoli to follow up on. Likewise, although the bulk of the characterisation focuses on Rizzoli and Isles, there is still enough characterisation to make you care about many of the background characters too. Bender's childhood is the stuff of nightmares - a desperately ill younger sister and a fanatical religious zealot of a mother who never hesitated to blame her first-born daughter for all of the younger sister's medical problems.Cue the drama as he throws caution, limits, and probably a few rulebooks out the window to make her his chosen one. Fifteen years earlier, at the age of 28, he had been subjected to the trauma of a mock execution before being sent to Siberia, a weeks-long journey in cold so severe that it could make people’s eyes congeal and encase their mouth and nose in ice. Yeah, the translation may have been rough sometimes but if you're going to read a German author you're gonna have to accept that before going in. and bc she’s an actual victim of CSA (not a listed trigger despite being heavily featured) she’s been groomed (listed) to believe she deserves it.

Un poliziotto di alto livello, e non c'è bisogno di guardare Lie to Me o qualche Real, dovrebbe saper riconoscere una menzogna. I remain completely blown away by Shantels ability to create character that has such a fierce lover for their partners, and Sin is no exception. Throughout the story, there is a fatalistic sense that Raskolnikov cannot resist his guilt; if he is not caught, he will confess.

Sin and Elli are born in an exclusive secret society and they have been groomed to serve this society to carry on the next generation. But the police commissioner, haunted by these unaswered questions, refuses to close the file and begins his own maverick investigation. In the chapel, one nun has been murdered and another one has been taken to hospital in a critical condition. And once again we see the awful consequences of religious fundamentalism on a growing child, We learn what an awful upbringing Cora had, with her mother suffused with rigorous piety, her father feckless and incapable of supporting her, her younger sister so badly ill that she is in and out of hospitals. To the unsuspecting eye Dee Stephens has a perfect life as the vicar’s wife: a devoted marriage to her charismatic husband Reverend Vincent, an adoring congregation and a beautiful daughter.

Perhaps it is this tragedy that has coloured her life, and the demons that were driven deep into her psyche suddenly emerged on that beach that sunny day and caused her to kill? However, I went through a point where I just really wanted to finish the book and debated on whether or not I should just put myself out of this misery and just read the last page.

It was also prophetic: in late January 1866, just when the first chapters were being readied for publication, a law student named Danilov committed an almost identical crime.
