About this deal

The Horseman overdrive from NUX is another worthy contender in the affordable Klon Centaur clone world. With both “Gold” and “Silver” modes, the Horseman contains a ton of Klon-inspired tones, in a small enclosure.

NUX’s Horseman is a two-in-one Klon Centaur tribute

Unlike many of the clones listed here, Ceriatone’s take on the pedal is uncannily similar to the original. It is housed in an almost identical enclosure, has the same tone shaping controls and very similar circuitry. This is a clone of the legendary Klon Centaur. For a pedal with only three knobs, it’s surprisingly versatile and actually houses a fairly clever design. I would also throw the discontinued BYOC Silver Pony into the mix – still available (assembled or as a DIY kit) from Alchemy Audio. There are dozens of musicians’ forums about Klones, rather than pasting them all here we’ll just defer to Google… they are pretty good at it! And if you like the sound of the Klon you may want to look also at this list of Dumble Style Overdrives, the second most hyped clone pedals these days. The build quality and design is great. The switching options for gold/silver and turning the buffer on and off are clever, the silent switch has a very modern & solid feel to it, and the aesthetics that pay tribute to the original are a nice touch.

Another “classic” way to use the NUX Horseman. Very useful when used in combination with the amplifiers drive channel (or any other drive pedal). And, depending on the Gain – Output adjustment, it lets the Horseman be used as a clean boost. Dial-up a low-gain with a high output setting, and it adds mostly volume and minimal color to your sound. You see, everyone expected this to sound “not very good” but instead it sounds extremely close to the originals. By holding down the footswitch you swap from gold to silver mode which has slightly higher gain, what a fantastic way to go about something that others have never done. The ‘No.1 Overdrive’– a Klon clone that Nordvang released in 2014 – proved popular for the quality of its tone, as well as its variety of tone shaping options. If you are going to be using your Klon style pedal a lot, then I would suggest opting for one of the top-end, hand made clones. It will be made with higher quality components and is likely to be sturdier and more robust. Gain: Adjust the intensity of the effect. Minimal settings allow the pedal to act as a clean boost, while h9igher settings add a little crunch without sacrificing the transients of your signal. This made the KTR smaller in size. It also allowed the pedals to be mass produced. The KTR has the exact same controls as the original Klon. There's a voicing trimpot, as well as three different two-way switches. One changes the filter in the feed-forward network, adding more clean bass to the overdrive sound. One switches between silicon diodes and germanium diodes. The final two-way switch is the most interesting. It changes the function of the tone control from being a treble shelf to more of a tilt-style filter, a bit like the sort of thing you'd find on a Big Muff. Used – Not liking to be considered just a “Klone,” the Illuminated Overdrive includes a nice added features: a 3 way toggle switch lets you select the type of clipping. NUX based this model on Keeley Katana and although it’s not as good as the original, considering the low price of Lacerate, it’s definitely worth it.

So if you are looking for Klon style tones but you don’t want an obvious Klon clone on your pedalboard, the Sugar Drive could be the way to go. My conclusion was that although the Klon is a brilliant sounding pedal, the price of used Klons has less to do with the tone of the pedal, and more to do with its popularity amongst famous guitarists, its scarcity, and the mystery behind its production. a Klon evolution sporting signature features and expanded voicing. The Adapt switch toggles two modes of a circuit that responds in real-time to the input to deliver more consistency to the resulting overdriven tone and its dynamics. A Dry knob allows control of the clean signal’s level, while a MOD switch gives you a standard voice and another one with a mid hump and a softer, more compressed clipping character.I mostly like to run it in silver mode with the gain dimed. This gives a great moderate/high gain sound which is great for chords and leads. It palm mutes like the gain structure of a real amp and has real amp-like harmonics. So if you are looking to get the legendary Klon tones, but you are budget conscious, this could make a great addition to your pedalboard. Ceriatone Centura Professional Overdrive However if there’s one pedal in the world which needs “kloning” its the Klon, because these things cost a fortune. But Nux isn’t the first and dare we say they’ll not be the last to make a Klone and a great price so what makes this any different??
